When preserve_symmetry=True, symmetry_preserving_bound already produces
the L discrete codes in [-1,1]. Won't the subsequent steps collapse them to just {-1,0,1}?

i think the issue went a bit deeper, so i spent a few hours and just worked out the math and redid some code

please let me know if you run into any other 🐛 !
