Description
There are Cat Face emojis #89 with some of the emotional expressions (gestures and grimaces) also offered by abstract human emoticons.

- ๐น โ ๐
- ๐บ โ ๐
- ๐ป โ ๐
- ๐ผ โ ๐

- ๐พ โ ๐ก
- ๐ฟ โ ๐ข
- ๐ โ ๐ฑ/๐ฉ
The same feature has been requested for other animals and anthropomoprhic emojis as well. Respective sticker apps like Petmojis have been made and are being sold. The latter include the Ghost ๐ป, Devils ๐ ๐ฟ ๐น, Aliens ๐ฝ ๐พ #7, Robot ๐ค, Skulls ๐ โ ๏ธ, Pile of Poo ๐ฉ and Pumpkin ๐, but also other existing or upcoming human characters (e.g. ๐ถ ๐ฆ ๐ง ๐จ ๐ฉ ๐ฑ ๐ด ๐ต ๐ฒ ๐ณ ๐ฎ ๐ท ๐ ๐ต ๐
๐ผ ๐ธ ๐ฐ). The former includes basically every animal, but especially mammals โย most often the Dog โ and the ones that are usually displayed as a head only in particular (not all of which have Face
in their Unicode designation): joypixels/emojione#419
- Dromedary Camel ๐ช is shown as a camelโs head in Emojione, while the Bactrian Camel ๐ซ has its full body, with 2 humps. Face of Disapproval emojiย #357
- Bear ๐ป, Panda ๐ผ, Lion ๐ฆ, Fox ๐ฆ, Frog ๐ธ, Hamster ๐น, Wolf ๐บ, Unicorn ๐ฆ have FACE in their name and are usually displayed as heads.
- Koala ๐จ, Boar ๐, Penguin ๐ง, Bird ๐ฆ, Chick ๐ค๐ฅ and Chicken ๐ are sometimes shown portrait-only, by Apple in particular โย and they are grouped together in their GUI for this reason.
- Unicode 9 animals Gorilla ๐ฆ, Deer ๐ฆ, Rhinoceros ๐ฆ and Eagle ๐ฆ do not feature FACE in their names, but are displayed as heads in several implementations, including Emojione. (The rhino is the only mammal head not facing the reader in Emojione!) Apple and Microsoft disagree. Pirate emoji proposalย #339
- Some other animals, e.g. Ram ๐, Sheep ๐ and Goat ๐ or Elephant ๐ are also sometimes shown as heads. All of these are used as Asian Zodiac signs.
- Itโs unclear how vendors will handle new animal emojis coming to Unicode 10 in June 2017: Giraffe ๐ฆ, Zebra ๐ฆ, Hedgehog ๐ฆ, Sauropod ๐ฆ and T-Rex ๐ฆ.
- Many other large animals come in explicit pairs, Dog/Poodle
Some vendors have associated certain facial expressions with particular animals, which has met with criticism. joypixels/emojione#339
It would not be feasible to encode each animal face with many different emotions. Instead, they could be the result of Emoji ZWJ Sequences: either {animal face emoji} + U+200D + {emoticon emoji} or, vice versa, {emoticon emoji} + U+200D + {animal face emoji}. Another possible option is to treat (most) existing emoticons as precomposed characters by introducing Combining Facial Expressions, e.g. for Laughing Eyes and Open Mouth.
Once introduced, both methods could also be combined. Only accessories like clothes (hats ๐ ๐ฉ โ ๐ ๐, glasses ๐ ๐ถ, makeup ๐ ๐, etc. ) and symbols (anger ๐ฅ ๐ข, sparkles โจ โ๏ธ, dizzy ๐ซ, hearts โค๏ธ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ค ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐, idea ๐ก, working โ๏ธ โ, sweat ๐ฆ, tear ๐ง, bubbles/balloons ๐ฏ ๐ฌ ๐ญ etc. ) would need to be possible right-side components then, e.g. ^
and U+02C6 ห
vs. U+0302).
