Dialectal phrases (italicized here) are frequently present in characters' direct discourses: the "Gnor si" of Geppone, from Mugello (VII) and the "Gnorsi" of the fisherman in Lionbruno, from Basilicata (XLI) maintain a colloquial, but linguistically and typographically inconsistent character; the cruel brothers from Monferrato in Il Mondo sotterraneo (XXXV) challenge the hero: "Come hai core di dire che hai ucciso il gigante, tu che sei un omicino?" Similarly, vernacular contaminations enter into Comparetti's narrative.
