Utilizing a combination of field experiments, dissections of clams, and information gathered from a literature review, we tested the following hypotheses: (1) temperature would have the greatest influence on the timing of reproductive initiation; (2) food availability, represented by a coarse proxy of total organic carbon (TOC) and SPOM, would influence overall reproductive effort; and (3) reproductive efforts would be similar in both shallow and deeper populations, resulting in a source of veligers for populating the nearshore environment.
We determined the nitrogen and carbon content and C:N ratios (mass basis) on subsamples (n = 2) of dried and pooled material from each of the dominant biomass compartments (wood and leaf CBOM, FBOM, SPOM, epilithon, and bryophytes) and each of the common macroinvertebrate taxa (Carlo Erba NA 1500 CN analyzer, Carlo Erba Instruments, Milan, Italy).
Ratios of [N.sup.15]:[N.sup.14] were determined on samples of epilithon, bryophytes, CBOM (wood and leaves separately), FBOM, SPOM, and the dominant consumer organisms collected weekly at each station during the [N.sup.15] addition, and 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 11, and 30 wk after the end of the addition.
Although the [[delta].sup.13]C values of phytoplankton, and hence SPOM, were expected to reflect the [[delta].sup.13]C values of the source [CO.sub.2], correlations between these parameters were not significant at either site.
Surface SPOM samples were 1.8[per thousand] more enriched in [delta][sup.13]C but 0.2[per thousand] less enriched in [delta][sup.15]N relative to bottom samples.
