I Loved Her in the Movies: Memories of Hollywood's Legendary Actresses Hardcover – November 15, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
In a career that has spanned more than sixty years Robert Wagner has witnessed the twilight of the Golden Age of Hollywood and the rise of television, becoming a beloved star in both media. During that time he became acquainted, both professionally and socially, with the remarkable women who were the greatest screen personalities of their day. I Loved Her in the Movies is his intimate and revealing account of the charisma of these women on film, why they became stars, and how their specific emotional and dramatic chemistries affected the choices they made as actresses as well as the choices they made as women.
Among Wagner’s subjects are Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Gloria Swanson, Norma Shearer, Loretta Young, Joan Blondell, Irene Dunne, Rosalind Russell, Dorothy Lamour, Debra Paget, Jean Peters, Linda Darnell, Betty Hutton, Raquel Welch, Glenn Close, and the two actresses whom he ultimately married, Natalie Wood and Jill St. John. In addition to offering perceptive commentary on these women, Wagner also examines topics such as the strange alchemy of the camera—how it can transform the attractive into the stunning, and vice versa—and how the introduction of color brought a new erotic charge to movies, one that enabled these actresses to become aggressively sexual beings in a way that that black and white films had only hinted at.
Like Wagner’s two previous bestsellers, I Loved Her in the Movies is a privileged look behind the scenes at some of the most well-known women in show business as well as an insightful look at the sexual and romantic attraction that created their magic.

—Liz McNeil, People
“Screen legend Robert Wagner has worked with some of the greatest female screen personalities of all time, from Marilyn Monroe to Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor to his former wife, Natalie Wood, and more. Wagner’s new memoir, I Loved Her in the Movies, pays tribute to his talented female counterparts over his 60 year career. . . . Wagner discussed the issue of gender equality in Hollywood and admitted that it’s difficult for women, even in more recent years. ‘It’s a business that’s run mostly by men. And—I think when you become successful and you become—an object—they’re put upon so much. . . . it’s hard to separate all of that.’”
—ABC News
“Wagner’s engaging memoir offers a warm embrace for the many women who helped him establish a successful career as a leading man or inspired him professionally and personally in their unforgiving business. . . . I Loved Her in the Movies is a delight in large part because Wagner can see . . . great female stars from a fan’s perspective. They were his colleagues and friends—some were his lovers—but he never lost his admiration for the women who could move an audience to cheers and tears. . . . What might be most surprising in the pages of I Loved Her in the Movies is the streak of feminism that runs through his reflections on stardom, the nature of talent and the demands of a Hollywood career. Actors had it tough in the studio system, but actresses endured even more in a business that, Wagner notes, was run by and for men who expected women to be submissive. Those who were not, like Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland, paid an even higher price for daring to rock the boat.”
—Douglass K. Daniel, Associated Press
“When Robert Wagner and longtime collaborator Scott Eyman decided to team up once again to explore the lives of Hollywood’s greatest and most titillating actresses, everyone was on board — including the two very special women in their lives. ‘Our wives loved the idea! That was one of the things that kicked us into writing,’ explains Wagner of what prompted him to write his latest book. . . . I Loved Her in the Movies is more than just another memoir, but rather an engaging love letter to the women who have captivated hearts all over the globe, and even to this day. Both fans of Hollywood’s Golden Age and readers eager to explore Wagner’s many personal relationships are in for a treat, because the actor himself still has plenty to say.”
—Stephanie Nolasco, Fox News Magazine
“Wagner reflects on a lifetime spent living on the silver screen, sharing intimate recollections working alongside and knowing some of our most beloved female stars. . . . A “love letter” to these many revered women . . . . Wagner discusses the way Hollywood female stars were marketed by studios and how the images of femininity changed over time, such as how the the 1940s femme fatale star—Joan Crawford, Lauren Bacall, Barbara Stanwyck—gave way to the ‘sweater girls’ of the 1950s, such as Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield.”
—Forbes
“I Loved Her in the Movies is Wagner’s collection of personal anecdotes and memories of Shearer, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Marilyn Monroe, Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor and pretty much every A-list actress of the 1940s through 1970s.Wagner loved them in the movies — and sometimes in the bedroom. . . . Collaborating with Wagner is a Hollywood historian’s joy, Eyman says, because the actor’s memory for revealing details is so sharp. . . . Wagner remembers so much, Eyman says, because he is the rare actor who is more interested in other people than himself. . . . ‘He never got over being a fan. When he got to know these actresses professionally and socially, he was paying attention to them the way a fan would . . . he noticed details you wouldn’t notice if you were simply hobnobbing with your peers.’ Wagner is also a man who genuinely likes women, Eyman says. ‘I think his relationships with women have defined his life.’
—Jan Tuckwood, Palm Beach Post
“Wagner writes a valentine to the ‘female movie stars that defined my generation.’ . . . There are tidbits of gossip—Fred McMurray was a tightwad; Veronica Lake was given to anti-Semitic outbursts—but most of the book contains casual recollections. His digression about the Studio Club, a residence house for actresses, is more interesting. . . . What emerges most strongly is Wagner’s sympathy and respect for the resilient women who had to fight harder than men to survive in Hollywood.”
—Publishers Weekly
“[Wagner’s] knowledge of Hollywood film history is prodigious. . . . The author is succinct and pithy at giving a sense/opinion of who [these women] were as people and what their strengths were as actresses. . . . Frothy and honest remembrances for gossipy movie fans.”
—Kirkus Reviews

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2017what a lovely book to read. Filled with wonderful stories and observations by a lovely man. RJ is the epitome of a Gentleman. Even when he may have a it of an icky memory of an actress , he puts the incident in the kindest terms and gives her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the Shitzuh dug up the flower bed that morning and it put the lady off her usually warm and gracious behavior. Doesn't pull punches though.
A very kind, insiteful description of the best of the Hollywood stars. Rj has a wonderful way of making you feel like you just met him and one of the actresses in the book. RJ and I have a couple of mutual friends but I have never been fortunate enough to meet him and tell him how much I enjoy his writing and films. I guess it is never too late though. - Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2016In the introduction to this book, Wagner writes that he will explain "why they became stars, and how their specific emotional and dramatic chemistries affected the choices they made....and will also discuss the strange alchemy of the camera---how it can transform the attractive into the stunning...and vice versa." That's a lot to take on and, unfortunately, he doesn't succeed in this otherwise enjoyable but lightweight paean to many goddesses of the silver screen. It is really more a jaunt down memory lane for him, beginning with meeting Moira Shearer who was the mother of a classmate. The chapters cover the decades beginning with the icons of the thirties. Shearer, Crawford, Davis, Stanwyck, Kate Hepburn, Irene Dunne, etc. The closest he comes to explaining their appeal is classifying Stanwyck and Crawford as ambitious working class icons and Hepburn, Claudette Colbert as aristocrats. As for the more recent stars of the 50's and onwards, stars with whom he worked, little explanation is given of their "chemistries", but is it really possible to explain the magic and luminousness of Monroe, Taylor, or Audrey Hepburn?
However, he has interesting anecdotes to relate and he is unfailingly generous and kind with his compliments, except for a few negative remarks about Shelley Winters and Raquel Welch. The book is a fast read and entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the sections on such stars as Irene Dunne, Loretta Young, Anne Rutherford and many more. Some of the women are fairly well forgotten today (Betty Hutton, June Allyson,
June Haver, Debra Paget) but it was still interesting to read about them and recall their movies. All in all, this is a lightweight but pleasant book of reminisces. We do learn two things about Wagner: he has worked with and known a large number of people during his 65 years in the business and he is still very much the star struck lad he was when he began his career.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2017This book is yet another example of why Robert Wagner is a national treasure. He is one of the last actors to come up through the old studio system in Hollywood. He personally knew most of the great actresses that he chronicals in this work, so the book is warm with remembrances that a straight biography lacks. Wagner's love of Hollywood and the great leading ladies is evident throughout and his writing has given me a better appreciation of actresses who may not be as well remembered as they deserve.
As to the audio version, Wagner reads his text very well. Despite being in his 80s, his voice is as rich and cultured as it was in his "Hart to Hart" days. I sincerely hope he continues in good health and continues to share his fantastic stories with his avid public.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2017Very pleasant but also very lightweight book by one of the actors in Hollywood who always has portrayed the nice guy. Not all of the actresses spoken of in the book are "legendary" -- quite a few are/were run of the mill. Wagner's comments about all of them are gentle. No skeletons exposed -- anything said about someone ex. Loretta Young and Gable having a child out of wedlock and keeping it a secret -- is already well known. He just offers his "take" on the situation. His comments about the film business then and now has already been covered by many others -- it's a man's business, women's careers begin to "die" when they turn 40 etc.
Wagner has a few things going for him -- he's not looking to settle scores, he has a very knowledgeable man helping him write these books -- Scott Eyman -- who I'm certain supplied him with the story of CB DeMillle adopting his brother's illegitimate child to raise as his own which Eyman covered in his bio of deMille and, finally, Wagner landed in the movies when there were still actual studios that built stars and he was the beneficiary of that system plus he got to work with or socialize with many of the stars of the Golden Era.
It's a pleasant book but not a great book. It's good for a few hours of pleasant distraction from serious problems that everyone faces.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2018Such a lovely read. This would make a wonderful vacation read-it-at-the-beach book. He goes much farther back in time than I would have thought but then he started in the movies so young. He paints an accurate picture without being mean or rude. And I love that he includes some stellar actresses that don't get the recognition that they deserve these days like Thelma Ritter, one of my favorites. I also appreciated that while he talks about Natalie and Jill, he doesn't go on and on about them, as he well could have. I always respected him as an actor and now I know him a little better as a man and also respect him as such.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2017I have watched and enjoyed Mr Wagner's work on the screen and TV for for over 50 years. Now after finishing his third book, I find he is also a great story teller. This study of the great women of Hollywood is full of classy stories some sad many uplifting, none ever boring. I wish him continued happiness and long life. His work is fascinating and highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read.
Robert Wagner is a acting legend, one of the last to come through the “studio contract system”, he has seen it all and he either knew or knows just about all of the actors/actress’s of the Golden years of Hollywood. Robert has 3 books and all of them are great reads. In this book he talks a book all the wonderful actress’s he worked with. If you are a fan of Hollywood History I truely believe you will really enjoy this book. Robert’s 3rd book - You Must Remember This - I could not put it down, it is the history of Hollywood Studios. How Hollywood all started, describing the city in great detail and the big estates of the silent stars. All 3 of Robert’s books get 5 stars from me I only wish he wrote more.

4.0 out of 5 stars RECOMMENDED FOR FANS OF CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD
If you are a fan of classic Hollywood you'll like this book. It's a personal account of the leading ladies whom the author met and worked with back in the day. The only thing that bothered me a little was the repetitive nature of some of his descriptions and opinions. But then again, there's only so much variation that can be expected in a work of this kind. All in all, a breezy enjoyable read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is excellent. I grew up watching many of these film stars. The insight of Robert Wagner of the film business as well as personal knowledge of many of the personalities cited makes this book not only interesting and informative but entertaining. I really enjoyed this book, its almost encyclopaedic. I was sorry when it came to an end. Would absolutely recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wagner knew all of these great actresses, so his memories of them really reveal ...
A very interesting book!! Wagner knew all of these great actresses, so his memories of them really reveal parts of their lives that were previously, for the most part, not known. Many of these memories are quite sweet. He has probably leaned more to "good" than "bad", but that's ok with me.....it shows again that Wagner is a nice guy and his memories, for the most part, are enjoyable. One gets the feeling that he is "telling it like was", as in his previous books, which I enjoyed as well.
