Product Description
Rhoda was the popular spin-off of the beloved Mary Tyler Moore Show, which begins as Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper) goes home to New York for a visit. When she unexpectedly meets "the" guy, Rhoda decides to move back. Joe Gerard (David Groh), the ruggedly handsome and divorced owner of a demolition company, is Rhoda's perfect match. The couple works hard to keep their relationship solid in spite of—and sometimes because of—nonstop interference by Rhoda's manipulative mother Ida (played by the brilliant Nancy Walker), her needy, depressed sister Brenda (Julie Kavner, The Simpsons), her loving but ineffectual father Martin (Harold Gould, The Sting) and, of course, the disembodied voice of Carlton the Doorman. In the first season, Rhoda and Joe met, fell in love, got married and set up life together. "The Wedding" (a one-hour special) reunited Rhoda with her old pals from Minneapolis—Mary Tyler Moore, Ed Asner, Cloris Leachman, Gavin MacLeod and Georgia Engel—in an episode that drove ratings through the roof. Rhoda's first season won Golden Globe® Awards for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy. Valerie Harper won the Emmy® Award for Best Actress in a Comedy that year. Rhoda would go on to win our hearts during its five-season run. #NAME?

It’s easy to see why Rhoda fans are ecstatic that the series has finally appeared on DVD (with all 24 first-season episodes on four discs), a mere 35 years after its broadcast debut. Shows like this are the comedy equivalent of comfort food: uncomplicated, reliable, not very spicy but tasty and filling. Sitcom meatloaf, you might say. Spun off from Mary Tyler Moore by co-creators James L. Brooks (whose formidable resume as a writer, director, and producer also includes The Simpsons, Taxi, and movies like Broadcast News and As Good As It Gets) and Allan Burns, the show finds Valerie Harper’s Rhoda Morgenstern returning to her native New York after a decade in Minneapolis. What begins as a short visit turns into a full-blown homecoming when she meets and immediately falls for the manly-but-sensitive Joe Gerard (David Groh); Rhoda at first lives with dowdy, amusingly neurotic sister Brenda (Julie Kavner, later to achieve considerable fame and fortune as the voice of Marge Simpson), but we’re barely a third of the way into the season when she and Joe decide to tie the knot.
Debuting in 1974 (it ran for five years), Rhoda is an interesting reflection of its times. Harper’s character is a feminist ("Thank you, Ms. Magazine," she says when Brenda congratulates her for taking the initiative with Joe), but still old-fashioned enough to balk at moving in with a man before they’re married. Sexual revolution notwithstanding, references to sex are chaste and fleeting. And in this pre-PC era, the show is unabashedly, old-school ethnic, with its broad Bronx accents and Rhoda’s stereotypically hovering, meddling, hard-to-please Jewish mother (hilariously portrayed by Nancy Walker). But if it seems a little out of date, Rhoda makes up for that simply by being funny and likable; the hour-long "Rhoda’s Wedding," one of the highest-rated TV episodes of its time, is a riot, featuring Harper’s former Mary Tyler Moore mates (Moore, Ed Asner, Gavin MacLeod, Georgia Engel, and the inspired Cloris Leachman) having an absolute field day. And let’s not forget show producer Lorenzo Music as the drunken Carlton the Doorman, never seen but often heard via intercom. The sole bonus item is a paltry reminiscence with Brooks and Burns but none of the actors. --Sam Graham

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2009When I saw the news that Rhoda Season One was coming out on DVD back in December 2008, it made my week. I penciled in the release date on my calendar and anxiously waited for April. Not long before the release date, I started seeing news about how the episodes had been edited from the originals, and people were canceling their pre-orders. I did not cancel my order and I am glad I did not!!! I am very pleased with the Rhoda Season One DVD box set. I know that I am too young to remeber the show as it aired originally in the 1970s, but I became fond of the show, as well as all the other MTM shows, in the 1990s by watching them on Nick at Nite and later on TV Land.
I urge Shout Factory to continue releasing all of the remaining seasons of Rhoda on DVD, edited or not. Of course, to please original fans, please do your best to improve the subsequent season releases on DVD. BUT- I wll take Rhoda any way I can get her. The season one set was not the color and audio quality of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but I think the shows are hilarious, even edited, and that the picture quality is good. You can still see all the great 70s fashions and set decorations clearly. There are a few jumps in the tape, especially on the Christmas episode, but I only saw this as a problem on about 3 of the 24 episodes.
Again - please continue to release all of the other seasons of Rhoda on DVD...SOON!!!! It is such a great escape for the working girls of today.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2024This TV series is timeless. So glad that I bought these DVDs as television is not so great these days.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2023I was thrilled to find Rhoda on DVD! My husband surprised me with this DVD for our wedding anniversary and I have watched it over and over again. DVD is high quality for non-bluray DVD and according to my husband it arrived fast!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2019I was a young girl when Rhoda originally aired on television. I remember her first as Mary Tyler Moore's friend and then later on her own show "Rhoda". I now own every season of Rhoda and loved them all. The picture quality isn't what you would see on today's television shows but if you take into consideration that these episodes are nearing 50 years old they are really good. It's nice to escape into the 1970s for a while with no cell phones or internet! Imagine what would have been lost if Rhoda just sent a text or tweet to Brenda or her mom. I encourage everyone to take a leap of faith, order the entire series, sit back and enjoy Valerie Harper at her best.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2009September 9, 2009 was the 35th Anniversary of the "Rhoda" tv series which began on CBS in 1974.
Valerie Harper played the role of "Rhoda Morgenstern" since the first episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Complete First Season (1970-77). During the 4th Season, she left to begin her own spin-off, Rhoda (1974-78).
Mary Tyler Moore would make occasional visits to see "Rhoda" on her show, 3 of them in the first season of "Rhoda", and Valerie Harper would visit on the Mary Tyler Moore Show during its Sixth Season and in the final show in 1977.
This long-awaited DVD set comes at an ironic time as two memorable actors from the "Rhoda" tv series had recently left us: David Groh and Ron Silver.
Nancy Walker passed away March 25, 1992 of lung cancer. Age: 69. She played "Ma".
Lorenzo Music passed away August 4, 2001 of lung & bone cancer. Age: 64. He was the voice of "Carlton the Doorman".
David Groh passed away February 12, 2008 of kidney cancer. He played the character of "Joe Gerard" for three seasons on "Rhoda".
Ron Silver passed away March 15, 2009 of Esophageal cancer. He played the character of "Gary Levy" beginning in the second season of "Rhoda".
Harold Gould passed away September 11, 2010 of prostate cancer. He played Rhoda & Brenda's dad.
This DVD set includes all 24 episodes of season one in the order as broadcast. Each episode is from the most finest print available, including the "Wedding" episode that was the highest-rated, most watched episode at the time.
Regulars include: Valerie Harper as "Rhoda".
Julie Kavner as "Brenda" (was the voice of "Marge" in "The Simpsons" bumpers on "The Tracy Ullman Show" in 1987-89 and "The Simpsons" animated tv series.
Nancy Walker as "Ida". You remember her from the film, BEST FOOT FORWARD (1943) with Lucille Ball, and as "Rosie"--the waitress in the Bounty paper towel tv commercials (1970-90). She passed away March 25, 1992 from lung cancer.
Harold Gould as "Martin" passed away September 11, 2010 at the age of 86.
David Groh as "Joe Gerard". His tv debut was in the "Dark Shadows" tv serial in 1968. He and Valerie Harper remained life-long friends.
Lorenzo Music as "Carlton--the doorman". He was one of the people who created and developed this tv series. He was never seen on the show except for his hand and arm. You can see him in The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1967) and in, Oh Heavenly Dog (1980) as "Carlton". He also did the voice of "Garfield"--the animated cat. - Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2009I have now watched the first four episodes. Based upon the reviews here I was expecting the set to be terrible. The truth is it is not as bad as a lot of the reviews indicate. I wish that all the episodes were uncut and looked in perfect condition, but what is here is better than not having any RHODA. The episodes are perfectly watchable and enjoyable. Some episodes in fact look very good. Don't stay away from buying the set just because the video isn't perfect. If you loved the show, you will find enjoyment in this set. The video quality is a lot better than the Room 222 set and I was still able to enjoy that set. I am enjoying the set and do miss the few minutes that may be missing on a lot of the episodes, but at least I can watch these episodes whenever I want.

That makes no sense why are some shows pristine and others damaged? The first four seasons of the Mary Tyler Moore Show look great how can its sister shows produced later look so crummy and have their original stock not taken care of.Its a darn shame we have to accept this lousy quality transfer of a popular show however its not the first time the viewers have been disappointed by inferior quality produced dvds on the store shelves now.Sadly for now its either by this or nothing so we ended up buying it anyways.Even with its flaws this is a funny dvd and makes it seem its 1974 all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars This takes me back!
How I used to love this series in the 1970s, and hey, I enjoyed it just as much after all the intervening years. To get the best from it, you really need to have watched the Mary Tyler Moore show, in which Rhoda and her parents first appear. Valerie Harper was so '70s stylish and a real role model for me and my friends - her character of the spiky but loveable Rhoda who had "issues" with food and the longest puberty in history struck a note. The marvellous Julie Kavner, who most of you will know as the voice of Marge Simpson, plays younger sister Brenda - the affection of these 2 "girls" comes through, even when they bicker. Must mention the incredibly funny Lorenzo Music, who you never saw, but who voiced the permanently inebriated "Carlton, Your Doorman" and often had some of the best lines - as with MTM, the scripts were generous and didn't stretch a thin idea of 5 minutes over the 20-odd of each episode. Would love to see the remaining series too - this was all before the days of VCRs or DVDs but I treasure the memory of Ida, the girls' momma, in the episode where they had to go home to mum and dad because they temporarily couldn't stay in their apartment block. Not sure if this happened in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th series, but Ida had them sitting up in their beds, with their hair done like little girls, while she read them a bedtime story. Only Nancy Walker could carry off something like that, but she was a wonderful star with so many years theatrical and film experience to draw on.
While the picture quality may not be a first class restoration, it is watchable and better than "beta" versions of many tv series which are sometimes the only way to collect old favourite programmes - studios please note, restore to the best quality if you possibly can, then your sales will be higher and recommendations more forthcoming from people who judge picture and sound quality above the sheer joy of a show like Rhoda - don't be put off - if you love American tv comedy and remember this with pleasure, you can enjoy it all over again after a long wait. If you have never seen it, you're in for a treat - but try and get the Mary Tyler Moore show first - wonderful in it's own right and the perfect introduction to dear Rhoda & co

5.0 out of 5 stars The best in jewish humour.
Right from the opening titles "my name is Rhoda morgenstern" this transports me back to I was a fifteen year old on holiday in Canada and this was just airing on cable.
I managed to watch 8 weeks of Rhoda before i came home to Ireland boy was I hooked and lucky for me one of our networks took a few series,I just loved the quirky Rhoda played by Valerie Harper and cringed at her insecurity with her soon to be husband Joe.
I had never experienced a typical jewish mother before and just loved Ida played by Nancy Walker.
The series went on till 1978 and was extremley sucessfull it really stands the test of time as classic comedy.
