- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2015Like the book. I am just getting into the mindset of simple living (minimalism) and soaking up all the information I can. It isn't what people think initially-no fun, boring, no color, straight lines, etc. Minimalism is living intentionally and deciding how far you want to go with it yourself. What minimalism is to you may not be the same as the next person. You get to choose how far you want to go with it. But you live more intentionally and you learn to not spend money on needless "things" when you don't really need those things. It is the ability to just say "enough is enough" and rethink the way you live. It is less clutter, less stress, and more time for the things that actually matter to you (hobbies, family, relationships, etc). Doesn't that sound awesome? If so, you would benefit from reading this book. I know it benefitted me.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2016I appreciated the thorough treatment of what it means to adopt a minimalist philosophy toward life. Other reviewers have pointed out that the book doesn't offer many specifics as to how to de-clutter and simply your life (with or without kids), and I only give it four stars for that reason. The writing could use some tightening up; it gets repetitive in places, but overall it's a great read. I'm happy to have the Kindle version to refer back to when I feel like my motivation is ebbing in any particular area.
I like that the author deals with the topics of overcrowded family schedules and family life on a single income (I.e. one stay-at-home parent). Clearly, he and his family are walking the talk.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2014This book was great. When I told my husband I was reading a book on minimalism he asked if we were going to sell all our stuff and sleep on the floor! So much is misunderstood about minimalism. It's different for everyone. I like that Becker points that out and makes it clear that it is not a one-size-fits-all lifestyle.
This book starts out with the "why's" of minimalism, and forces you to think about what your true values/priorities are.
Then Becker goes into some key areas of "stuff" that we own and gives some easy and practical steps to getting rid of the clutter in that particular area.
The last part is more advice on some specific people or situations that will not apply to everyone (such as bringing a new baby into the home or living on one income).
Overall this book was a great stepping stone for me in evaluating my stuff and will help in giving me tools as I make this journey. We will be moving soon, which I saw as a great opportunity to start this journey, but I'm realizing it's going to take a lot longer to get through it and discover more about my stuff and what it says about who I am and what my values are.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2014Clutterfree with Kids should be put in every parents diaper bag as they leave the hospital with their newborn(s).
There is nothing more important to myself and my family than the time we spend together.
That is oftentimes a challenge due to things we are use to seeing as necessary time constraints such as cleaning the house, organizing photos, fixing broken toys and electronics, etc...
Joshua presents the idea of "less is more" as not just a philosophy but a day in, day out way of life.
This is the book I wish I could give to my kids grandparents without it immediately insulting them.
If you are looking for practical, beginner level ways (and even advanced level ways) of creating more time for your family, more space for what is important, and more relaxation and peace within your home, give Joshua's book a read.
As other reviewers mentioned, not only will Joshua help you with practical ideas, but he'll give you the "why" behind doing them. I've found that without the why, habits often don't stick for me.
My favorite part of the book was definitely the list of gifts we can give our kids instead of the usual toys and games. If for no other reason, read the book for these genuine, uplifting suggestions.
Job well done Joshua. Eager to read anything else you publish.
Thank you for sharing your life.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2014If you are looking for a how-to book, this is not it. However, it is a great book for soul searching.
It's filled with the author's personal experiences of living a minimalist lifestyle, and incorporates case study options to see how others have taken this philosophy into action (and why).
I walked away with a handful of "projects" to work on, along with a few deeper conversation topics to have with my husband.
Its best geared towards those who know little about the minimalist lifestyle and encompasses one's whole life and not just for kids.
My favorite quote: "There is more joy to be found in owning less than can ever be found in organizing more."
It's given me a lot to ponder about the cost of what we own; how things cost much more than the price tag you pay for it--every time we pick it up, put it away, organize it, etc. takes time away from something else we could be doing (spending more quality time with your kids.)
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2015As a person who grew up in poverty, I find that my mindset is very much that of a pack rat. I gather and hoard things with the thought that I -might- want or need them. Over the last decade, I've realised that my current level of abundance is at a mismatch with my mindset. Stuff we have 'just in case' is keeping us from enjoying the stuff we love.
Now that I have young children, the need to begin modelling a mindset of abundance seems even more critical. I'm watching my children confuse -stuff- with joy and status and entertainment.
This book will not give you great insight on how to purge your house of the unnecessary. For that there is 'The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up' or a million books on organising. Instead, this book will arm you with inspiration and resolve to work through the process, even with children towed in your wake.

5.0 out of 5 stars positive, helpful, inspiring
Being a mom of 3 energetic, lively, wild boys struggling juggling together with my much more tidy husband a large household, work and family life, this book has encouraged me on my way to decrease complexity in our house and lives. Becker's tone has strung chords that needed to be touched in order to follow through on our hopefully life-changing project of decluttering and reducing stuff and overcoming ancient patterns of keeping objects due to a blurred and subconscious anxiety. He also offers ways to include our kids (even at their very young ages of 7 an under) which do work. His message to model anything you want to see in your kids sounds profane at first, but actually realizing and living it in the context of consumerism and the meaning of stuff has helped to enlarge my perspective -- my kids now see and feel that I am being serious about changing our habits!

4.0 out of 5 stars necessary when living with no minimalists..
it is helpful when dealing with no minimalists at home, it is full of samples and experiences.
It is clear and easy to be read. I liked a lot the samples provided and how the author explain them.
I would recommend it to everyone not only people interested in minimalism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holistic and Realistic
I really enjoyed the author's writing style, it made the book easy to read and engaging. I thought I understood minimalism before reading but now I see it was just one facet that I'd understood. He explains it so well and shows how it isn't really a set recipe for what is minimalist, it goes much deeper than just getting rid of stuff or having a goal for your ideal number or possessions. His focus on living intentionally reallly resonated with me and particularly in regards to parenting.
I would recommend this book to any parent or parent to be. Even if you, like I did, think you could never be a minimalist I think you'll find lots of gems in this great book that might change the way you look at stuff but also challenge your priorities.
