FP evaluation criteria

My evaluation criteria for Featured picture candidates

• Composition
  • Clearly identifiable subject
  • Interesting position of subject (golden division lines)
  • On landscape shots - horizon not in the middle
  • Composition can't be messy - too many objects make subject indistinguishable
  • Background should be free of any distractions or not fitting objects like here (some man-made objects on nature closeup shot)
  • Horizon has to be straight
  • On architecture photos: picture has to have proper geometry (no tilts, skews etc.) if it's not made on purpose
• Quality
  • First of all, I check image quality at 100% magnification - I don't care if photo looks fine when looked from distance or zoomed-out. FP image should be outstanding.
  • There should be minimal amount of noise - especially no JPEG compression artifacts
  • Small amount of high ISO noise is acceptable when photo is made in low-light conditions
• Size
  • Generally images below 2Mpix are not acceptable. Exception is 1600×1200, because it's popular format, only slightly below 2Mpix threshold.

Evaluation criteria are only guidelines, which can be disregarded with mitigating reasons, eg. photo was made in very tough conditions, can't be remade etc.
