Hej FogueraC! I do not understand why file:Afrikaans-Dutch language world.svg should be removed from the category:Linguistic maps of the Afrikaans language but kept in the category:Linguistic maps of the Dutch language. The same map gives info on both languages, so it would seem logical to include it in both categories. Can you enlighten me? Richard 10:32, 5 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

It's a terminological conflict. "Dutch" may refer to the (let's say) "proper Dutch" or to the "bigger Dutch" that is the union of proper Dutch and Afrikaans. As the map gives info on both proper Dutch and Afrikaans, it should be in the bigger Dutch category. In Commons, the Afrikaans category is in the Dutch category. So this means that the Dutch category is the bigger Dutch category.
I don't know if there is any criteria for the categorization of languages in Commons. As I have seen, it seems to agree with the family language section in the infotable of the English Wikipedia. At least, it is the criteria that I use. You can see that in the Afrikaans infotable it is categorized as Dutch. If you want to change it, I imagine that it should be changed there first. --Foguera (talk) 20:04, 5 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Usually, one would categorize items in the deepest branch of the category tree that fits. For instance, 'Eiffeltower' would be in 'Paris' which in turn would be in 'France'. Putting 'Eiffeltower' in 'France' as well would be superfluous. In this case, it becomes a bit harder since 'Afrikaans' would be a deeper branch than 'Dutch'. However, the map deals with both 'Afrikaans' and 'Dutch' so putting it only in the category 'Afrikaans' would make it incomplete. Still, not putting it in the category 'Afrikaans' does not feel right, either. As you said: 'Dutch' is an ambiguous term. On the map, it is used for what you call 'proper Dutch'. It does not include 'Afrikaans'. Since the map makes a distinction between Dutch and Afrikaans, in my opinion, it would be better to keep the map in both categories. For now, I have re-added the category. Richard 08:59, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Lengua valenciana

edit

Category:Linguistic maps of the Ukrainian language

edit

Hello. What is wrong with categorization of the files File:Dialektologicheskaia Karta 1914 goda.jpeg and File:Linguistic and political map of Eastern Europe, Casimir Delamarre, 1868.jpg with Category:Linguistic maps of the Ukrainian language? Those files shows distribution of Ukrainian language, so I do not understand why not to use the relevant category. --ZxcvU (talk) 21:08, 10 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Because it's overcategorization. The first one is very clear: it's a map of the East Slavic languages, so it has to go in Category:Linguistic maps of East Slavic languages, not in all of its subcategories. The second is the same: it's a map of the languages of eastern Europe, so it has to go in Category:Linguistic maps of eastern Europe, not in all the categories of languages of eastern Europe. Imagine a linguistic map of the world. We would put it in Category:Linguistic maps of the world, not in all the linguistic categories. --Foguera (talk) 22:57, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Initially I thought that such categorization would make it easier to look for maps for languages, but your point seems right too. Sorry for the disturbance. --ZxcvU (talk) 06:57, 12 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrol given

edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 05:10, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi FogueraC,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Historical expanse of Ainu.png is out of date. Were there Ainu on the Asian Mainland? See talk page. Could you update it? Thanks again. Geographyinitiative (talk) 23:08, 25 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Linguistic maps by language

edit

Hi! About your revert (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Linguistic_maps_of_Jewish_languages&oldid=537974739) there are already a few subcategories that have "languages" rather than a single language, so I don't see the problem with including those categories in "Linguistic map by language". --SynConlanger (talk) 20:23, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello FogueraC since you edited this category, I was wondering if you would consider a rename because of the misspelling Category:Linguistic maps of Oto-manguean languages Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 12:52, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, there's an error in the language distribution... I'm Majorcan, and I don't speak CATALAN, but MALLORCAN! I would appreciate it if you would correct it. Since we are not Catalans,We are MALLORCANS(MALLORQUINES) . 92.178.165.84 18:03, 11 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Linguistic maps of Amerind languages has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hola FogueraC! --LametinoWiki (talk) 15:59, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

He revisado mejor y he notado unos pequeños errores. Moltes gràcies --LametinoWiki (talk) 16:13, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
