btw it is sexy and cool to uplift and admire people who have skills you wish you had without using their ability as a stick to beat yourself with. even and especially if you are jealous of them.
“you’re so good at this. wonder what that’s like.” not a real compliment, just passive aggression.
“i guess SOME people are just naturally talented.” not a real compliment, you’re diminishing their efforts in order to find an excuse to kick yourself.
“seeing this makes me want to quit.” not a real compliment, just a fucking bummer.
“must be nice to get so many views. i wish i could get even half as many.” not a real compliment, they don’t have any more control over how much engagement they get than you do so it doesn’t go to their merit, just your bitterness.
none of these are compliments. they are burdens. they will hurt the person and they will hurt you. if that’s your intention, that’s a whole different thing. but if you genuinely want to pay a compliment and can’t quite manage it without it coming out bitter, trust me - silence is better.
i get it. it’s normal to feel jealous. the feeling isn’t wrong. the behaviour is. stop using other people’s success to hurt yourself. no one wins. it is a SKILL to retrain yourself into viewing your peers as teammates rather than competitors, and it is something you actively have to work on. if you struggle with it, don’t worry, you are not doing it wrong. it does not come easily. sometimes i have to trick or force myself into changing my thinking, but it’s a skill i need, because my jealousy is my own problem. i am only preventing my own growth by allowing it to control my behaviour.

i think it’s important to be mindful of emotions in general. it helps to sit with yourself and reflect on where it’s coming from, then manage it as appropriate instead of being hair-trigger about what it makes you want to do.
for jealousy in particular and social media, if someone is making you feel that way and it’s literally ruining your day, it’s a sign to stop scrolling. if it keeps happening, there’s the block/mute button. it’s not weakness to use either of those moderation tools
imo channeling it as drive to improve yourself is also healthier. there’s always something you can learn from others and honestly constantly reminding myself that people didn’t get there without putting in the work necessary keeps things in perspective. a lot of the time i realize i’m not willing to put in the same effort as others did, but in the case where i’m like, “yes, i really want to get good as this fellow and i’m willing to invest time” then my course of action is clear.
because yes, hard work and perseverance do go a long way!! maybe you won’t see the results at once. but if you keep at it, you will get where you want to be

[…] it’s the same approach i take to language tbh particularly in pronunciation. once you understand how a language forms its sounds at a base level, you dont struggle with the accent on particular words, and you can encounter words you’ve never seen before and understand how they’re likely to be said/spelled/etc. so once i learn to 'speak’ a character they come more naturally. idk if that comparison makes sense to anyone else but it does to meeeee all this to say i think a character is ooc if they do or say something i cant reconcile with that core!
the death note wip is a multichap!! thank you for your interest!!! ill talk about it more once i’ve stopped tying myself in knots plotting it!! broadly it’s a what-if type au which has led me to replot an entire series from scratch dont look at me

ok let’s talk about one of my favourite scenes of the entire series, which i think is widely not super well understood but honestly to me holds the key to light’s entire character. it’s right there in volume 1
sorry, the only digital copy ive got on hand is the scanlation. for comparison the official print copy reads:
bubble 1: hey, maki, wanna party tomorrow with some guys from s. college? ten o'clock. bubble 2: yeah, totally! bubble 3: hey, can i go too? bubble 4: my mom isn’t here yet? what’s that nag doing, geez! light (thinking): damn… light (thinking): start looking around you… light (thinking): and all you see are people the world would be better off without.
this happens within the first 40 pages of the first volume. and it’s like. haha hey light what the fuck? this is a totally normal scene in everyday life. people are talking about living their lives. nobody’s done anything remotely reprehensible in this scene. and light’s just walking through the streets experiencing apparently unprompted and quite extreme misanthropy. what’s wrong with him
