Pretorius was born in Johannesburg. He represented Western Province and the Sharks at school level and played for the South Africa Schools 'A' team in the Under-18 International Series in 2015.
After school, Pretorius joined the Golden Lions academy, playing for them at Under-19 and Under-21 level between 2016 and 2018. He was released by the Golden Lions at the end of 2018,[1] and joined Pro14 side the Southern Kings.[2] He made his first class debut in their match against Edinburgh, scoring a try seven minutes after coming on as a replacement in a 25–21 victory.[3]
