Making the template smaller

edit

I recently made changes to condense this template and was reverted by User:AviationEnzo with the reason "How its done for every other single MLS team. I see nothing wrong with it anyways".

Per WP:NAV, navboxes "are intended to link articles to each other. That is, every article listed on a particular navigation template generally has the template placed on its page." Adding links to articles such as 2023 Major League Soccer season, or adding multiple links to the same article with section anchors, goes against this. WP:NAV also says navboxes "should be kept small in size as a large template has limited navigation value", which is why I think large headings should be avoided if not strictly necessary. WP:NAV also says "Unlinked text should be avoided.", so a non-linked mention of the 2023 Supporters Shield is also not appropriate.

I agree with you that many other MLS templates are indeed made excessively large with unnecessary headings and links to irrelevant pages or individual sections of the main article; I think those templates all need cleanup as well. This is not done for teams in any other American sports league (e.g. {{Cincinnati Bengals}}, {{Cincinnati Reds}}) nor is it done for soccer teams in other countries (e.g. {{Liverpool F.C.}}, {{Real Madrid CF}}).

AviationEnzo, could you please share your thoughts? Thanks, IagoQnsi (talk) 00:54, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

I've taken a second look at it and I am inclined to agree. I think the only reason it should remain how I made it is if FCC wins the MLS Cup when this navbox could actually be linked to the MLS Cup article. I apologize for my fast revert. AviationEnzo (talk) 01:11, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
