editFrom Proto-Finnic *hinta, from earlier *šimta-, possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *śímta (compare Lithuanian šimtas (“hundred”)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥tóm (“hundred”), and thereby a distant doublet of sata. Cognate with Estonian hind, Erzya чонда (čonda, “ransom”), чондат (čondat, “money (archaic)”).
