malka
Finnish
editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Finnic *malka, borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (compare Latvian malka (“firewood, splinter”), Lithuanian malka (“firewood, splinter, log”)).
Pronunciation
editNoun
editmalka
- a (thin) wooden pole or beam that extends from the ridge to the eave, with such poles forming the topmost layer on a traditional birchbark or straw roof (on top of the birchbark or straw which serves as the waterproofing material)
- 1933/1938, Pyhä Raamattu [The Holy Bible], Helsinki: Suomen Pipliaseura, Evankeliumi Luukkaan mukaan (Luke) 6:42:
- Kuinka saatat sanoa veljellesi: ’Veljeni, annas, minä otan pois rikan, joka on silmässäsi’, sinä, joka et näe malkaa omassa silmässäsi? Sinä ulkokullattu, ota ensin malka omasta silmästäsi, sitten sinä näet ottaa pois rikan, joka on veljesi silmässä.
- Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.
