Barred Spiral Galaxy

My recollection is that the Milky Way Galaxy was determined to be a barred spiral galaxy in the relatively recent past (maybe even in the current century), but there is nothing about this either in this article or in the article on barred spiral galaxies. I think something should be included about the time period when this was discovered. I putzed around a while in the notes trying to find a date or a source, but I couldn't locate one right away.
