Hi. I just wanted to say that your composition guide is *excellent*. Clear, concise, and still comprehensive. The Composition tips PDF is not available on Gumroad anymore. Is there an alternative location? I'd like to share it with my daughter who isn't on social media because of her age.

hey! glad to hear you appreciate it so much, thank you. i’ve taken down all my gumroad listings for the time being bc i’ve been having issues with receiving payouts from the platform :’^))

i’ll work on moving my digital listings to a different platform later this year- in the meantime, my tumblr post and deviantART page are probably the best place to grab the jpgs, and i have a ko-fi page up if you’d like leave a tip 👍 you can also email me (genicecreams@gmail.com) and i can manually send you the pdf and psd files haha

hope that helps!

>be me >thinking about colors >colors are different wavelengths of light >light=energy >energy follows the laws of physics >entropy is a law of physics >wtf is entropy low entropy=energy concentrates high entropy= energy spreads law of entropy=energy is predisposed to disperse evenly consider the circle and the sphere: circle= even 2d distribution of energy sphere= even 3d distribution of energy what if... color models are predisposed to form into circles and spheres when "all" ranges are evenly included? presenting: THE SHRIMP SPHERE aka. "wouldn't it be sick as hell if there was a color model that 'included' the colors that mantis shrimp can see"ALT
the SHRIMP SPHERE Color is a wavelength of light (energy) that is visible to the human eye. But just because a wavelength of light is unperceivable to humans, does that mean its color does not exist? Consider the Mantis Shrimp: it has 12 different types of photoreceptors in its eyes, whereas humans only have 3. What can the Mantis Shrimp see, that humans do not? Are the colors it perceives only hypothetical because humans cannot perceive them? Or can it be decided that the Shrimp’s colors exist, because it can be assumed that they would? In a hypothetical exhibition of this color model, the sphere would be constructed with a multitude of nodes. Each of these nodes would emit or reflect and absorb a specific wavelength of energy. Then, using math, the wavelengths of energy would be evenly and 3-dimensionally spaced apart, until it forms a sphere. Within the sphere, there are two kinds of nodes: Positive nodes, and Negative nodes. Positive nodes emit light (energy), and within the visible spectrum are perceived as “additive color.” Negative nodes reflect and absorb light (energy), and within the visible spectrum are perceived as “subtractive color.” The resulting construction would probably be reminiscent of the HSL color sphere, however because the Shrimp Sphere includes wavelengths of energy invisible to the human eye, large sections of it would likely appear to be empty whiteness or blackness. In this way, the Shrimp Sphere is ultimately just a demonstration of both the limits and potential of human perception.ALT
How It Works upper range: invisible to the human eye and probably damaging to the human body (eg. UV light, x-rays, gamma rays) center: ("white") limit of human perception of additive color range of visible light: range between the center (white) and the human limit of perceiving subtractive color (black) "black": limit of human perception of subtractive color lower range: wavelengths too low to be detectable by the human eye (eg. infrared light, radio waves) north pole: infinite mass of energy (eg. God, probably) south pole: complete absence of energy (eg. void of outer space) --- Intersections with Other Color Models human vision of additive color: sits on the upper half of the range of visible light human vision of subtractive color: sits on the lower half of the range of visible light gamut of human visual perception: sits in the additive color vision range, with the white point in the middle. this is demonstrated in the diagram with the CIE lab gamut, which contains the subtractive model of color, thus the placement in the upper half of the visible light range. if the CIE lab gamut were to be integrated more accurately into the Shrimp Sphere it would probably sit within it in a shape reminiscent of the CIE 1964 chromaticity model, with the "white point" in the center of the sphereALT
thou shalt not literally create the Shrimp SphereALT

Hi! I was just wondering if you had an estimate for when your shop would be open again for orders. No rush at all whatsoever! I just know I want to be first in line :)

Would love to even sign up to be notified for when it happens!

hey!! just posted about this on twitter and bluesky but i’ve scheduled my next shop opening to happen on feb 17 at 12pm PST

here’s a preview of what’ll be in the catalogue ^_^

it’s been a bit over a month since the news of don perro’s passing came out 😢 don was the founder of capilano’s animation programs, a good teacher, and deeply missed by so many.

i graduated from the cap program in 2018, and the dynamic my classmates and i had with don was different than most because he was on sabbatical for our first year. but even in his absence, his name and influence was all throughout the program.

when i was weighing my options for post-secondary schooling, capilano’s reputation among its alumni was striking to me- basically everyone i encountered spoke of its culture and community very warmly. it was hard to find negative reviews, when many of the more prolific schools i considered came with cautionary accounts of things like predatory tuition, overwork, abusive staff, etc.

capilano’s not perfect either of course- i think mileage varies for any student going into any kind of school. the program prioritizes training folks to work in vancouver’s animation scene, its faculty are human, the workload gets heavy, and so on. but here’s some things that stood out to me, when i was a student 7 years ago:

i’ve gone on to work as a lab supervisor at this school- my job is to hop on a zoom call for 3 hours every week to give feedback on student assignments, and chat through questions people have about building a creative career. as a student, the help i got from the lab supes was one of the things that made the program really stand out to me. it’s been an honor to have a chance to do something similar for others.

returning as a part of the faculty, i’ve got to see firsthand just how hard the program’s leadership sincerely tries their best to put students and their needs first. don initiated that spirit- he’d been gradually stepping back in recent years, but the direction he’s imparted on the program and everyone he works with is lasting and special. it takes on a life beyond him. he was always so proud to see that
