- 1243, near Carcassonne, France -

Shrouded in darkness is the history of a time of terror. A time when people lived in fear, were divided, conquered and enslaved. The state was the church, and the church was the law; when justice was the tool of the self-seeking, and when imprisonment and poverty weren't enough to satisfy the enemy's appetites...

Featuring the stunning artwork of
Dmitry Yakhovsky, this debut graphic novel is a bold undertaking. The novel is a complex and visually inspiring epic based in history, and will thrill with its masterful depth of imagery.

This is the start of a very intriguing story! The narrative is captivating and left me wanting more. But the best part is the artistry - it is beautifully done. The scenes are amazingly detailed and the characters are incredibly realistic. I can't wait to read the next edition! The quality of the book itself is also fantastic!

I've had this on my TBR list for a long time and finally have gotten around to reading it. There is wonderful artwork in this graphic novel, and the beginning of a story of old as well.

Buy this for the art. It is gorgeous.

I confess that I usually don’t read graphic novels, but this one seemed to be very different. The attention to detail in this book is impressive and each page is a work of art on its own with exquisite scenes. Not many words are needed for the artist to vividly describe an exciting story about an imprisoned woman and the Cathars, set in medieval Carcassonne. I cannot wait to discover what happens next in the second part and I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in medieval history. For the sheer beauty of the water colour images alone this book is worth its purchase. As a huge bonus it’s telling a captivating story.

In his first graphic novel, Dmitry Yakhovsky shows himself to be a very capable story teller and an emerging talent in the area of graphic novels. His first book captures both the classic comic book stylings of the 1950s and 60s novel form stories, while showing innovation in the media he employs in creating the images. With so many artist operating only from a digital art base, Dmitry’s use of water colors and other traditional art media give the book a texture that makes it unique among this generation of graphic novel authors.

Having seen Dmitry's previous work (and been lucky enough to receive a piece of artwork from him) I have been greatly anticipating the release of his first graphic novel. The most striking thing is how breathtaking each and every artwork is and they really do speak 1000 words, they aren't just a supplement to the story but are an integral part! Anyone that has an interest in graphic novels, and especially for medieval history, this is a absolute must buy!

I also purchased the physical printed version and wished to praise its high quality finish!

Certainly not the usual type of read I'd go for, but I was pleasantly surprised to be quite interested in the story. The volume itself was shorter than I was expecting but definitely did enough for me to want to read more. The art is very well done, and I'll have to keep an eye out to see how it progresses.
