Lent is a 40-day penitential period of prayer, reading biblical scriptures, fasting, abstinence and almsgiving that prepares Christians for Easter. It starts on Ash Wednesday(March 5, 2025) and ends just before Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is to focus on:
- Remembrance of the events leading up to Jesusβ crucifixion and sacrifice for the debt of our sins.
- A time to imitate Jesus Christβs obedience to our Heavenly Fatherβs will. He had a 40-day fasting in the desert in preparation for the start of his ministry on earth and in choosing his disciples. In the Old Testament, Moses also fasted for 40 days before God gave him the 10 commandments.
- A preparation for Christians to celebrate the miracle of Jesus Christβs resurrection.
- A time of sanctification for Christians to grow spiritually and practice self-control by mortifying the flesh. Christians practice self-discipline and abstain from luxuries to weaken the sinful nature of man.
- Christians share Godβs gifts by saving up resources such as money or food to give to the poor and practicing true compassion.
Fasting starts on Ash Wednesday until Good Friday. Christians mostly do water fasting and partake one full meal a day. Abstinence is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. It also involves abstaining from all forms of idolatry and attachment to worldly pleasures and possessions by bringing our hearts to God and becoming more like Jesus Christ.
You can prepare your heart by writing down what you will pray for the next 40 days.
βThe twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: ΒΉΒΉβYou are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were created.β

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
