It’s a Red Week

This week there was red cut, and red sewn.

Four potato chip blocks.

I also sewed the double red gingham binding on the red, cream & green SAHRR table topper/ small wall hanging.

An early morning photo complete with a tree shadow. 😲😟

Did I get a photo of the actual sewing? Nope. But here is the rolled up “show the binding” photo.

And another peek at the back.

I’m linking up with Angela at ScrapHappy Saturday  Come check out the red under the needle of some other quilters.

Finished or Not Friday

I have a fully finished SAHRR. If you are not familiar with this yearly challenge you can read about it Here! These posts  track some of my process. Center Block and Round One! Round 2 & Round Three followed. Long story but it ended up like this after adding Round 4, (Sliced Squares) and Round 5 (Quarter Log Cabins) and Round 6 ( Kite Blocks).

I wasn’t sure about the kite blocks, but they ended up sort of  looking like “bows” on the split square “Christmas packages”! Not intentionally but I like it.

I sent it to the quilter. Now it’s bound and completely finished. Well, it still needs a label. But finished for now.

Hanging out on the backyard gate in the early morning sun and shadows.

LeeAnna chose these for our questions today. Go to Not Afraid of Color and check out how others answered. goodyou remember dying easter eggs? did you do it with your mom, or the other kids,

Do you remember dying Easter Eggs?   We did dye eggs. I was the oldest so l helped my mom get ready. The thing I remember most is the dye was added to hot water and vinegar. Ooh the smell!

Did you have the crayon to premark them? I  remember having the marking crayon that acted as a resist to the dye, but I remember this when I was a young mother and my daughter loved making the words or designs show up like magic.

What did you do with them? As a child, and the oldest, I always hid the eggs and my sister and brother hunted for them. As parents, the dad hid the eggs so the kid could look for them. I often had to remind him not to put them too high. There was frequently snow on the ground so the egg hunt happened in the house.

Do  your mom, or the other kids,

We have had a nice couple of days this week. The trees are budding out in the yard. I still haven’t seen flowers, but to be truthful,  my yard doesn’t have perennials. But my Holiday Cactus decided to make one bloom!

I have been reading about mushrooms coffee. Mostly the Ryze brand is what I have noticed in commercials and ads on Facebook.  But there is a product called Mud/Wtr, that my granddaughter had mentioned. I read up on that one. Seemed like it would have more flavor with the chai spices and the cocoa. The jury is still out. I tried it yesterday. But I got a frother in my intro pkg. ❤️

Got the SAHRR back from my quilter Aggie. It’s gorgeous. I’ll be hand stitching the binding to the back today at my stitching group. The quilting is gorgeous. Holly leaves, berries and swirls.

We/I started watching  Virgin River , Season 6.  It’s a Chick Flick, based on books by Robyn Carr. Mr Busy sits and plays on his iPad, at the kitchen table like me or on your lap in front of the tv? at an actual desk? Do you use a computer or do it from your phone or ipad?  show us a pic if you can, of your set

First Slow Sunday Stitching of April

Happy April Sunday. I’m joining Kathy and some friends at Slow Sunday Stitching

I stitched this Spring Stamps Sampler  from Melisa at Pinker n Punkin in 2023.  I used a pice of 14 count Aida from my stash. I coffee/tea dyed it. Loved stitching it, but the fabric was nearly too small. I added some fabric to the sides so I could still use the hoop.

I was confident I could find a frame when I was finished. I mounted it on a sticky board, measured and sorted through my recycled frames. Nothing.

So onto plan B. Because there is not enough Aida for a decent seam allowance, I ran a running stitch of white floss 2 squares away from the burgundy border. This was my guide. I sort of appliquéd it to the piece of burgundy gingham. Then I machine stitched the antique rick rack with a crocheted border to edge of the sampler. (bottom right) Then I ironed a piece of Pellon SF101 to the back. Then pieced a stripe fabric from my stash for a backing.(top left) Today I will finish stitching down the split hanging sleeve.(upper right). What a learning curve!

Also today I’ll finish stitching this Bunny Alphabet Sampler.

Just XYZ left to stitch with variegated pink.

ScrapHappy Saturday. April 5th

April’s Color is Red!

I meant to check back with So Scrappy  to double check to see what the official announcement of the color told me. But, I was stitching an Easter themed project, and was almost done. Also, I had a dentist appointment April 1st and they sent me home with a prescription for an anti-viral. I had a cold sore on my lower lip. The hygienist said “no thanks”!

I have cold sores often, but this one did make me feel kind of under the weather. So I took a nap. 💤 The medicine helped a lot. I’ll go back to get my teeth cleaned on Tuesday. 😊

So this morning I discovered the color was announced as RED on April 1st. So I sewed while my cleaning lady was here.

A red potato chip block in the making.

Oops. Sometimes I can’t sew a block even if I have a sample in front of me.

A little bit of unsewing and resewing and it’s much better!

I have more red cut for another block. I’ll try to do 2 a week. My neutrals are scarce. Maybe a trip to the LQS is in order!

First I’ll post and link up with Angela at ScrapHappy Saturday !

 April 3 2025

LeeAnna posed this question- hop over to Not Afraid of Color to see how others answered this question

as a youngster or teen,  did you get a new dress, hat  or shoes for  Easter?  go to church or have big family gatherings? Do you mark the holiday now in some way?

Always a new dress, hat and white shoes. Gloves sometimes. Although in South Dakota, we often had to don our parkas and slip new shoes into overshoes.  I wish I could find photos, we were quite the stylish bunch.

after all,   we are all antique little girls  under all the adult-ing we do

Nowadays are different. I still look at ‘Easter’ dresses in magazines and on line. But don’t buy. I may cook a ham, make my mom’s orange jello salad, and Angel Food cake or Strawberry Shortcake. Maybe some asparagus, which my mom never fixed. We’ll see.

I didn’t get much sewing done this week. Spent most of my time doing laundry and straightening my sewing room. I did decide on a way to fully finish the Spring Stamp Sampler From Melisa at Pinker n Punkin  that I finished stitching in 2023. I’ve been looking for the correct sized frame, but haven’t been unsuccessful. There will be this fabric and lace.

It will be a small wall hanging. Fingers crossed.

Got some happy mail this week. Can you guess where they came from?

We’ve finished watching Reacher, Season 3.

And are staying caught up on 1923, though the finale is this Sunday!

Table Scraps Challenge March= Yellow and or Song Lyrics/SongTitle/Poetry

So there was some yellow fabric cut and sewed into potato chip blocks in March

And there were scraps leftover that became crumb blocks.

Then I thought of lots yellow themed song titles or song lyrics. I’d made a similar one last year for PQ 15.2 January 2024

This could have been, “Here comes the Sun” or “ Put on a Happy Face” so I didn’t want to do sunshine again.

So this is my finish: Remembering John and George, Paul and Ringo. Did you watch Ringo’s Grand Ole Opry Debut, last week? Yellow Submarine was written by Paul McCartney with lead vocals by Ringo Starr.,

Yellow Submarine

I finally found a free graphic of a submarine.  I traced the sub and the periscope and the propeller. In retrospect  the propeller and the periscope probably should have been lighter. Maybe gray?

The blue fabric with bubbles, seaweed and even fish was a surprise to find. It was a chunk and determined the size of this mini. SCORE!  I dumped one of my button jars. I didn’t get a photo, cause I ended up bent over picking up spilled buttons. 😲 These blue buttons were from either my mom’s stash or my MIL’s craft stash. Either way, they found a home as portholes on the sub. I added triangle corners when I sewed on the 1 7/8ths inch binding. It will probably live in my sewing room.

I’m linking up with Joy at The Joyful Quilter, our hostess for Table Scraps Challenge 2025!

And with Alycia, for  Finished or Not Friday

And since only crumb blocks and one more potato chip block were completed, I’ll link this post with Scrap Happy Saturday!
