Seward's Folly

A nickname for the 1867 purchase of Alaska by the US, which was widely seen as an enormous waste of money. Named for Secretary of State William Henry Seward, the architect of the deal. The discovery of gold in Alaska helped turn the tides of opinion on Seward's Folly.
