chug along

1. To move forward slowly, as of a train (which stereotypically makes a chugging noise). The train is chugging along again, so we should be at the station soon. We did have a delay, but the train is chugging along now. I'll let you know when we're approaching my stop. A: "I can't believe the train didn't stop at my station—it just kept chugging along!" B: "That's because this is an express train, pal."
2. To proceed steadily. Don't worry, the project is still chugging along, in spite of all the setbacks. Do they really think the search for a new CEO can just chug along now that the company is embroiled in multiple scandals? I know it's a lot of paperwork, but just keep chugging along—you'll make a dent in it sooner than later.
