hide

1. informal A person's skin. I think I burnt my hide from lying out in the sun too long. I will tan your hide if I ever catch you smoking cigarettes, you hear me? Papa will tan your hide when he finds out you lied to him!
2. By extension, a person's ability to ignore or remain indifferent to verbal attacks or criticisms. If you're going to pursue a career in politics, you need to have a thick hide so that the criticism of your detractors doesn't bother you. Watch what you say about Uncle Ed's writing—he's got a pretty thin hide if you have anything other than praise to share. Rejection is constant in Hollywood—you'll never make it without a thick hide.
