We are proud to announce Bezoar 3!

Bezoar is a monster-themed mini-comics anthology, started by a small group of Athens, GA cartoonists. However, for issue 3, we’re doing something a little different…

Bezoar contributor, incredible cartoonist, and wonderful pal Patrick Dean has recently come under some pretty severe health problems, being diagnosed with ALS.

As Patrick’s friends and fellow cartoonists, the Bezoar crew decided that we wanted to help out in any way we could. We decided it was time to put together a new issue of Bezoar, extend the net of creators further to include other friends & colleagues of Patrick’s, and use whatever funds come from it for his benefit! All money from sales of Bezoar 3 will go to Patrick and his family to assist with medical bills, quality of life, and just as a way to let them know we care.

So, let’s talk about Bezoar 3!

As with the previous issues, Bezoar’s theme is MONSTERS. Creators are welcome to interpret that however they like. Check out this killer list of contributors!

SATURDAY
11:00 AM
Room 203B
ALL AGES PANEL TURNS 37 (old enough to know better)

We’re in a golden age of comics for kids and teenagers. Why have all-ages comics become such a dominant force in the industry? What are the unique challenges of creating and marketing comics for different age groups? JOEY WEISER, NAOMI FRANQUIZ, TED NAIFEH, ANDY RUNTON, and JUNE BRIGMAN talk with moderator AARON KASHTAN about the past, present and future of comics for younger readers.

HeroesCon is coming up, June 14-16 in Charlotte, North Carolina! And that means it’s time for me to open up for commissions!

I draw commissions at the show as well, but I like to set up some beforehand that I can draw at home for you to pick up at the show.  My standard rate for preordered commissions is $25 for a 5″x8″ single character ink drawing.  If you want multiple characters, or something specific that’s a little more involved, I have affordable rates that I’d love to discuss with you!  Just email me at joey@tragic-planet.com to inquire and get put on my list.  The deadline to preorder a commission is Friday, June 7!  I prefer that you prepay with Paypal, but arrangements can be made to pay at the show as well.

So, please get in touch with me by June 7, and I’ll see you at the show!

TCAF 2019

I’ll be at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend! If you live in the Toronto area, definitely come by and say “Hi!” I’ll be at table 279 on the second floor. The show is free to attend!

This is the debut convention for Ghost Hog, my new graphic novel, and I’ve even got a few panel appearances lined up!

  • Saturday 10:00 AMPigs! Pigs! Pigs! It’s the Year of the Pig! – Meet the creators of two exciting new porcine releases, Howard Wong (The Unhappy Little Pig) and Joey Weiser (Ghost Hog), as they talk about how and why they made their recent books. This is one session that definitely won’t be a boar!

  • Saturday 4:00 PMThe FLIGHT Anthology Reunion Panel – A discussion of the history and impact of the award-winning FLIGHT anthology series. 12 years after its initial publication, many of the contributors have since gone on to have successful careers in graphic novels and animation. Join founder and editor Kazu Kibuishi, with contributors Bannister, Jason Caffoe, Tony Cliff, Stu Livingston, Fabio Moon, Richard Pose, Katie Shanahan, Kean Soo, Joey Weiser, and other special guests for a look back and discussion of FLIGHT’s continuing influence on comic anthologies today!

These are both going to be tons of fun! I’ve got a little presentation prepared to introduce Ghost Hog and its inspirations for the Pigs! panel, and the FLIGHT panel is going to be nuts! So many creators in one small space, reminiscing about our experiences together!

Ghost Hog in Stores NOW!

image

Ghost Hog is in stores now!

A new graphic novel from the Eisner Award-nominated creator of MERMIN that deftly navigates loss, vengeance, and acceptance!

Truff is the ghost of a young boar, fueled by fury towards the hunter who shot her down. She has a lot to learn about her new afterlife, and thankfully the forest spirits Claude and Stanley are there to guide her!

However, they soon find that her parents, along with their fellow animal villagers, have been kidnapped by the malicious mountain demon Mava! Truff wants to help, but… the hunter is finally within her grasp, and if she lets him go, she may never get her revenge!

Is vengeance all that being a ghost is good for? Or is there something stronger keeping this little pig tethered to the living world?

image

I am so excited that this book is out there in the world now, and that people are starting to read it!

I spoke to Comicon.com about the book, if you’d like to read more thoughts from me on the book. Ghost Hog came out yesterday in bookstores, and is hitting comic shops today! In fact, Paste Magazine calls it required reading!

Weiser’s proved himself gifted at spinning out a narrative and cast of characters more complex than most folks produce for kids.

Early reviews have been great! Here is one from Kirkus, and one on The Beat!

Weiser’s graphic novel, with its lively artwork reminiscent of Sunday comic strips, renders the complex themes both entertaining and understandable.
- Kirkus

The graphic novel provides an easy-to-follow plot that can open up discussions on topics many people—young and old—struggle with. It’s a book that parents and kids can enjoy together filled with life lessons, humor, and heartwarming moments.
- The Beat

There are a few different previews available for you, if you’d like to sample the book. One at my website, one on Paste, and even more preview pages available on my Patreon!

Free Comic Book Day

image

Free Comic Book Day is tomorrow, Saturday 5/4! I’ll be signing at Richard’s Comics & Collectables in Greenville, SC from 11am-5pm!

There is a special Ghost Hog FCBD issue that I can’t wait for folks to read! It’s been getting some great reviews from places like NPR who says that you should “definitely” pick it up, and All Star Comics Melbourne!

Open, dynamic, colorful and decidedly kid-friendly art, but there’s some knotty, thoughtful stuff here: themes like regret, obsession, guilt, shame and empathy. - NPR’s Glen Weldon

An unexpectedly deep little comic, Ghost Hog is heartily recommended. - All Star Comics Melbourne

The Ghost Hog FCBD issue contains two original stories, not included in the graphic novel! But you won’t have to wait long for the book… it comes out the following week! And if you’re at Richard’s Comics, you won’t even have to wait that long! I’m going to be bringing a few advanced copies of the Ghost Hog graphic novel for sale!

But no matter where you live, from the United States to Australia, go out to your local shop on Free Comic Book Day and they’ll give you free comics, including Ghost Hog!

Diamond’s final order cutoff is Monday, April 15th! If you plan on buying your copy through your local comic shop, or anyone who uses Diamond as their distributor, you have until 4/15 to preorder the book! Preorders are extremely important – They not only guarantee that you’ll get your book the day it is released, it also shows retailers that people are interested in the book, and might inspire them to order more copies for their store!

Ghost Hog is being published simultaneously in hardcover, Diamond Order Code JAN192022 and softcover, Diamond Order Code JAN192021. Take your pick!
