fvriva asked:

cheriville for the 10 questions

  1. What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

Fascinating how much thought op put into this simple question. I will try to also put some thought into it lmao

Cherise’s favorite flavor is strawberries and cream, and while that mostly applies to dessert she won’t balk at strawberry and cream sodas. She also likes Shirley Temples. Things that are bubbly, sweet, and fruity, that’s her. Also despite being a minor she has had red wine with dinner since she was like 12, because french. She wouldn’t drink cocktails, only sweet wines.

Neville is a rootbeer drinker. As a San Francisco native he buys Mug for himself but at a restaurant if they sell a fancy glass bottle rootbeer he’ll try it. Also as a member of the Compact he has strong opinions on the secret Fey flavors of coke. His favorite is regular.

2. What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

Cherise has a number of expensive magic items whose purpose is to allow her to skip her morning grooming as much as possible. These include a powder puff that can do all her makeup in one pat and a hairpin that pulls her hair up into her signature do instantly. She enjoys feeling clean and looking nice, and enjoys cleaning herself, always brushing her own hair rather than relying on the pin. She loves long baths.

Neville keeps clean because he hates being grimy but does not take very much care of himself or his appearance. The sole exception is his hair, which, being curly, requires extra attention, at least if you don’t want it to get all twisted and knotted, so he always takes the time to comb his hair properly whenever he notices the sun has come up.

3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

They’re both teens from moneyed families. They get good allowances but seeing as they both attend private boarding schools they mostly spend that money on food or clothes. Well, Cherise does. Neville spends most of his allowance on crafting materials and gas for the car. Though this does give me the idea to write some kind of story about one or the other needing to buy something…

4. Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)

Cherise has a few scars on her body and neck from the incident in her youth where she was bitten all over by a swarm of baby dragons. They’ve mostly healed, so for the most part they just look like faint, pale, razor-thin lines on her skin. She has no other scars despite taking far more grievous wounds owing to her powers.

Neville doesn’t have any scars.

Earlier versions of their story gave them both a baptismal mark that defined their powers; Cherise had a pair of wings on the back of her neck, and Neville had an anvil on his arm.

5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)

Cherise doesn’t full on sob often but is easily moved to tears by things that are very sad or very cute, like if she found a very small dog.

Neville last cried after his breakup with his ex, Elmindreda. However he has teared up from physical pain after that, though he doesn’t think that counts.

6.Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Cherise is the youngest of two children. Her brother Luc is at least ten years older, old enough that she looks up to him as an almost heroic figure. She’s never been around children her age until she went to the Scholomance; he’s the closest thing she’s got.

Neville has two sisters; a twin sister named Nancy and an older, adopted sister named Dolores. Dolores is away at her higher educatation and he respects her. Nancy attends Neville’s same school and they don’t get along that well. They love each other, but don’t hang. Neither of them knows who is older.

7. Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Cherise has a lot of different shoes. In any given art of hers currently existing she’s probably wearing heavy riding boots suitable for a knight, often covered in metal sabatons. For everyday wear though, she likes a cute, comfortable shoe, typically in red. She wears heels for special events but usually it’s flats or if she needs to walk, boots. She has exactly one pair of sneakers, a hideous pair with a rainbow science pattern on black that she loves because they’re comfortable and because Neville gave them to her.

Neville wears a sensible brown shoe for the most part, either his school loafers or some oxfords. Once he starts doing more adventuresome stuff he invests in a pair of Timberlands.

8. Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

Cherise’s room at the Scholofrance (Paris Scholomance) is small and spare, because the Scholofrance dorms are medieval peasant houses that have been slightly modified for modern living. There’s hardly any room for personalization, but she has brought some nice blankets from her home, as well as stands for her weapons, made for her by her brother. Her bedroom there is a beautiful princess bedroom with fluffy blankets and pillows, her collection of plushies, and bookshelf laden with knightly romances and other such things. A painting of the battle of Roncevaus Pass hangs over her bed.

Neville’s bedroom is crowded, as he and his family live in a nice townhouse in the city, albeit bigger than Cherise’s dorm. He has the inverse situation from Cherise, in fact, having more room at his dormitory than at home. He’s by and large moved his tinkering supplies to the Scholomance, leaving most of his media collection at home (film reels, videos, vinyl records). The Scholomance dorm contains his book library because it’s more immenently useful, as well as a coffee maker, a mini-fridge, and various trophies from his adventures. It also has a four-poster bed, as most scholomance beds do.

9. What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)

Cherise is a Christmas girly, she loves Christmas, she’s always on the Christmas shit. She lives giving gifts and receiving gifts, caroling, drinking hot drinks, staying up late and telling ghost stories until midnight, then running and “hiding” from Pere Noel while he leaves the presents. Being religious, her family also goes to nighttime mass.

Neville’s favorite holiday is Halloween. While he doesn’t care for the dressing up aspect, he takes it as an opportunity to inflict a Universal Monsters Marathon on his loved ones.

10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Cherise always carries at least one weapon on her person, though the actual weapon varies based on the time in the story. After Long Sunday, it’s the bone tanto Neville gave her (wow he gave her a lot of stuff that day!) She also always wears a pair of earrings with blue glass spheres for gems because they match her eyes, and of course her hairpin.

Neville always has his messenger bag on him. It’s enchanted to provide not only storage but to fit his current needs; for example, it provided a pair of shoes for Cherise when she needed them (it gave her the galaxy print ones).

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:

  1. What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
  2. What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
  3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
  4. Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
  5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
  6. Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

All questions on Goonivere

you’re insane

  1. What inspired you to create your oc?

So there’s this rat bastard character I made that you, specifically, are obsessed with, whose lore spiraled out of control. At one point in the past you suggested that one of my other OCs, a black slime girl named Wynetta, should be in love with him, and I vetoed it. After that I decided to create a character who was obsessed with him, who should be the inverse of Wynetta. Continued in the next question

2. Why does your oc look the way they do? What are your reasons for their appearance?

The aforementioned Wynetta is a tall, fat, voluptuous woman with a flat affect, and again, a black slime (black pudding I believe in dnd terms) so I decided her opposite would be a short, slender (bony even) (slimes have bones in this setting) creature with a creepy smile. Being as she waas a yandere stalker I said she should have long hair that covers her face like sadako, but all white, making her look like a ghost. Slimes in this setting also use fake eyes (in addition to fake bones) to see with that tend to have an eerie red, yellow, or orange glow. (hers started yellow but became red after the incident)

3. What is the origin of the character’s name?

Goo + Guinevere, which apparently means white wave, an apropos coincidence. I made her juuuust before “gooning” became a popular term. Which is perhaps also an apropos coincidence

4. Why did you give them the name they have? What is the in-universe reason for their name?

I don’t think all that deeply about names, lol. I go with something that sounds nice. I steer away from overly symbolic names since people in real life tend not to have them. That’s not to say I never do it. In-universe, there’s no real reason. My slimes have names with squishy sounds; Ws, Qs, Ss, though it’s not a hard rule. just straight up putting the word “goo” in her name was rather lazy but I didn’t expect her to take off and now I’m married to it

5. What kind of abilities and power level does your oc have? Why did you give them their powers? What’s the in-universe reason?

Goonivere is rather lacking in combat abilities, but she is more powerful than the average human owing to her slime physiology. Actually, incidentally, slimes are called shoggoths in universe I’m just used to not using it. Anyhow, she can extend pseudopods from her body, breathes passively through her skin like a frog, and is covered in a highly acidic mucus membrane. She also has tremorsense, as shoggoths are naturally blind. She has an aptitude for magic but can’t use it owing to a mental block. One of my friends insists she has clown immunity but this is not true. She actually just has very good luck owing to having a wishblade imbedded in her core.

6. What are the weaknesses in their power? Why did you give them their weaknesses? What’s the in-universe reason?

Goonivere can’t hold her humanoid shape without her skeleton, rather like a kandra from Mistborn. Her inability to use magic is owing to trauma from her backstory as a great sorcerer queen in ancient times, which she forgot all about.

7. Does your oc have any notable skills or good personality traits? Why did you give them those traits? Why do they exist in-universe?

Weird that these are the same same question. Skillswise she doesn’t have a lot of useful abilities, other than being decent at stealth, what with stalking a certain rat bastard and living in his vents for an undisclosed amount of time. She likes animals and is good with pets. She is very friendly and good at making friends.

8. Does your oc have any notable flaws or activities they’re not good at? Why did you give them those flaws? Why do they exist in-universe?

She has a couple flaws, same as anybody. She can be a bit airheaded and stubborn. It takes her time to see the truth when she’s convinced herself of a lie for long enough. She also tends to hyperfixate on interests. It went from true crime to yaoi to blarthuriana.

9. In a group dynamic, what kind of role does the oc usually fill? Are they a worry wart? A troublemaker? The straight man?

She’s the comic relief in any group, as well as being an incurable optimist. When necessary she will give her friends a pep talk, especially if they’re feeling down about romance.

10. What is your favorite trait regarding your oc?

her beautiful soul

11. What is your least favorite trait regarding your oc?

true crime fujoshi wombo combo

12. Which canon characters (if any) do the oc have good relationships with? Why those characters?

Goonivere is weird because she lives in my spaceverse which has become a big silly playground for AUs of all my characters and all your characters. She’s on good terms with everyone except skurret, who hates her and whom she has become extremely jaded over.
Oh the question means like as a fandom thing. nah it’s an original setting. all canon. Or none of it is. Or something

13. Which canon characters (if any) do the oc have bad relationships with? Why those characters?

See above

14. Did you give your oc a love interest? Is it another oc or a canon character? Why?

Lol, originally obsessed with that rat bastard as a karmic punishment for him. I eventually gave her to wynetta as a wife (in a future split timeline) and a tragic romance with king blarthur (a whole other can of worms). Also I married her in a dream lmao

15. How does your oc interact with the canon narrative? What about it do they change?

Fandom specific question

16. What aspect(s) of the universe’s lore are they connected to? Do they change/add lore to the universe?

Fandom specific question

17. List/describe up to five tropes that apply to your oc. They could be related to the oc’s characterization or their narrative arc.

Yandere (she got over it), gag character, sunshine girl, amnesiac, chosen one, sort of, I guess

18. Imagine meeting your oc. What would you want to say to them or do with them?

Well I married her in a dream, so that might mean something

19. How might your oc react to finding out you are the one responsible for their life?

She would hug me and say thanks for the memories and burn my skin because she forgets she is acidic

10. Share a random piece of trivia about the creation of your oc. Examples: scrapped ideas or changes you didn’t expect to make.

I didn’t expect to love her. I intended for her to be an odious little creature but when the first art came in I did an immediate 180 and now he’s one of my faves.

Meta OC Questions

Once upon a time, I posted a series of questions asking about thematic/symbolic elements in relation to ocs.

Well now I've decided to create a new set of oc questions, this time touching upon meta elements of them as well as how they interact with the world they're placed in.

I'm mostly aiming these questions at fandom ocs (which is more obvious in some later questions) but these could also apply to wholly original characters.

Being an evil doppelganger has to be so fucked up like imagine meeting a better version of yourself. Some chain of events going differently that led to "you" being a better person in a way you can never achieve. Personally I'd have no other option but to try and kill them

tlirsgender

It's always "oh no my evil clone or twin or whatever is trying to kill me" and never How is my evil clone? Says a lot about society

tlirsgender

Me, crashing the fuck out: you think you're better than me? You think you're fucking better than me???

My good clone, dodging a glass: I mean like objectively yeah

Frequently thinking about legendary periods in mythology and history. I love the idea of stories set in those times. Unfortunately all there is are booktok ancient greek retellings. Someone give me a shounen battle manga about the Yellow Emperor or the unification of Egypt
