Army Secretary John McHugh has the ability to send the case to a military commander, who would assess whether any charges will be filed against Bergdahl. As the Inquisitr has previously reported, Sgt. Bergdahl went missing in the mountains of Afghanistan in July of 2009. Reportedly captured by the Taliban, Bergdahl was then turned over to the Haqqani terrorist network in Pakistan. In May, Bergdahl was released as part of a prisoner exchange, in which five Taliban commanders were granted their freedom. Army has finished its investigation of Bowe Bergdahl. Earlier he had said, The problem is that, you know, Im the president of the United States. Im not the emperor of the United States. My job is to execute laws that are passed, and Congress right now has not changed what I consider to be a broken immigration system. [Lies during the Obama years] perpetuate the fairy tale that the IRS acted properly, that government isnt corrupt, that ObamaCare is working just fine. In January, talking to The New Yorker, he referred to ISIS as a J.V. team, then when Chuck Todd called him on it months later, said, I wasnt referring specifically to [ISIS]. Wrong. In March, Obama said on Between Two Ferns, Most young Americans right now, theyre not covered by health insurance. Not true.
Toobin: 'Guantanamo's been a disaster' McCain: Taliban will 're-enter the fight" Exchanged prisoners' Taliban ties "Almost every one of my clients has reported identical treatment to what Samir details in this piece," said Alka Pradhan, counterterrorism counsel for Reprieve US, an international human rights nongovernmental organization headquartered in London. Reprieve represents a total of 10 Guantanamo detainees, including nationals from Yemen, Pakistan, Tunisia and the United Kingdom, Pradhan said. Pradhan, however, wasn't involved in the preparation of Naji's op-ed, which is written in Naji's words, she said. Some of the abuses continue, Pradhan charged. "They are still in freezing cells, they still have problems with food, and they are still being treated roughly or hit by the guards," she said. "Recently, this past summer, (the detainees) had incredibly invasive genital searches" whenever they left their cells to receive a phone call or meet with their attorneys, said Pradhan, who has visited Gitmo three times. "Some of them felt they were being penetrated," she said of the searches. "It's just that the torture continues in different forms, but as long as the government applies this secrecy to Guantanamo Bay, we won't find out until years after the fact." Guantanamo Bay: What happens when detainees held for years get out? Guantanamo detainees -- of which there have been nearly 800 -- were allegedly tortured at the site, drawing widespread international condemnation from human rights and civil liberties advocates who decried the interrogation techniques and the U.S.
Lazarevic was freed because Mr. Hollande has nice eyes. Another Frenchman kidnapped in Mali in November 2011 along with Lazarevic, Philippe Verdon, was found dead in July 2013. A security official in Mali, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared for his safety, said Lazarevics release came after negotiations to free two al-Qaida fighters arrested in his abduction. The two al-Qaida detainees were transferred to mediators in Niger on Saturday and turned over to al-Qaida, the Malian official said. It was not clear if they remained in Niger. A French official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the issue is sensitive said Lazarevic was freed Tuesday but declined to give any details on the release of the al-Qaida prisoners beyond saying the negotiations over Lazarevics release were led by Mali and Niger. Lazarevic and Verdon were kidnapped from their hotel in Hombori in northeastern Mali while doing a feasibility study for a future cement factory, their families have said.
Susan Rice has also served the president from the earliest days of his campaign and has been a smart and capable aide. She was also unfairly attacked by partisans over Benghazi and the president loyally and admirably stood by her. But there is no denying that she has presided over the NSC during one of its roughest patches in modern memory and that some of the responsibility for the problems it incurred must rest with her. She is part of the problem with relations with other departments, with key allies, and she is not seen as the kind of disinterested honest broker a national security adviser should be. Rice is also decidedly not strategic, and a different national security adviser who could better emulate the model set by successful predecessors like Gen. Brent Scowcroft on both fronts would be welcome. With that in mind, regardless of what Obama does on the personnel front, one more change is critical.
However, the couple were blocked from leaving Qatar on Sunday by immigration officials at Hamad International Airport, who confiscated their passports, according to the Doha News agency, which cited a family spokesman Eric Volz. A new warrant had been issued for their arrest on unknown charges, the agency cited Volz as saying. The couple remained at the airport Sunday night with the U.S. Ambassador to Qatar, Dana Shell Smith, Doha News reported. Earlier, Matthew Huang issued a statement thanking the Qatari judge for his decision. This has been an emotional trial for me and my family, Matthew Huang said in a statement. Grace and I want to go home and be reunited with our sons. We have not been able to grieve our daughters death, but we want to thank the judge for todays decision. The Huangs who were living in Qatar while Matthew Huang worked for a international company working on construction projects for the 2022 World Cup were arrested in January 2013 when their 8-year-old daughter Gloria died.
"We appreciate the strong support we are receiving from our friends and allies around the globe." Georgia took three prisoners from Guantanamo in 2010. Slovakia has taken a total of eight men from Guantanamo. The release of the three Yemeni prisoners, the first of that nationality to be resettled since 2010, was unusual because the U.S. has been reluctant to send them to their unstable homeland and has struggled to find alternatives. They make up the majority awaiting transfer. California GOP Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, called for a halt to the transfers because of the potential that some former prisoners could pose a threat. "What the Obama administration is doing is dangerous and, frankly, reckless," he said.
Bowe Bergdahl? In May, the Afghan terror group called Haqqani released Bergdahl in exchange for several terrorists held by the US at Guantanamo bay. Now, it appears this was not the way it was supposed to go down. Republican congressman Duncan Hunter is trying to find out if the US tried to pay a ransom to Haqqani in January or February, but that we got ripped off instead. In June, Hunter wrote a letter asking the Pentagon, Central Intelligence, and the FBI to explain. It is my understanding, he wrote, that a transfer occurred that possibly included payment to Haqqani from the Taliban for the receipt of Bergdahl. Then, earlier this month, Hunter wrote to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, asking him to confirm payment to an afghan intermediary who disappeared with the money and failed to facilitate Bergdahls release in return. The policy of the US government is not to pay ransom for the release of military personnel or civilians. And thats probably why the military brass is telling hunter that the money was not ransom, but payment for information about where Delta Force commandos could find Bergdahl. Theres no word on how much the Afghan con man stole, but reports say Bergdahls family was ready to pay $10 million for his release before the White House put a stop to it.
Legal experts expressed doubts that the GOP would prevail or that the case could be concluded during Obamas presidency. The suit echoed Republican complaints over Obamas Thursday night announcement of executive actions preventing the deportation of 5 million people who immigrated to the U.S. illegally. GOP lawmakers said those unilateral steps were unconstitutional and have promised unspecified congressional action. Fridays lawsuit did not address immigration, though a Republican official said party leaders might add that later. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal Republican deliberations. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Obama has chosen to ignore the will of the American people and cast the battle as one with important implications. If this president can get away with making his own laws, future presidents will have the ability to as well, said a Boehner written statement.
Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, in the Rose Garden at the White House in Washington May 31, 2014. Obama, flanked by the parents of Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, a U.S. soldier who is being released after being held for nearly five years by the Taliban, said in the White House Rose Garden on Saturday that the United States has an "ironclad commitment" to bring home its prisoners of war. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst Islamic State militants released a video on Sunday depicting they had decapitated American aid worker Peter Kassig following the beheading deaths of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff earlier this year. State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said Tuesday that a "small number" of U.S. citizens are still being held by the Islamic State, but refused to provide a specific number.
