KOREAN MUSIC SHOWS

Music shows are broadcasted weekly in Korea, with different artists performing on the shows to promote their music. Each broadcasting company has their own music show: SBS MTV has The Show, MBC has Show Champion and Music Core, Mnet has M!Countdown, KBS has Music Bank, and SBS has Inkigayo. Each show has its own chart systems, in order to award the most popular music act every week, so there are different possibilities for an artist to win on each show. The criteria for each music show consists of the following categories:

Digital Sales Score: streaming and downloads data of the song.
Physical Sales Score: total physical sales of the album (Hanteo and Gaon charts).
Social Score: based on YouTube music video views and other social media such as Twitter, Weibo, etc.
Judges’ Committee Score: votes of experts in the music industry.
Pre-voting Score: votes collected before the show. Fans are able to vote for their favorite artists during a determined period of time.
Live Voting Score: votes collected during the live broadcast of the show.
Broadcast Score: how much the song was got airplay on TV or radio programs on that particular broadcast channel.
Viewer's Committee Score: a survey that is randomly sent to viewers who are registered for the survey panel for that particular broadcast channel.

AMERICAN CHARTS

Regarding global recognition, the Billboard charts reflect the biggest music popularity in the United States. For Wonho, the Charts that matter the most are:

  • The Hot 100: this chart's rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States.
  • Billboard 200: this chart is based mostly on sales (both at retail and digital) of albums in the United States.
  • Social 50: a popularity chart which ranks the most active musical artists on the world's leading social networking services. Its data is based collectively on each artist's weekly additions of friends, fans and followers, along with artist website views and streaming media.
  • Artist 100: this chart combines performance across the Hot 100 chart, the Billboard 200 album chart, and the Internet-centric Social 50 chart.
  • Digital Song Sales: ranks the best-selling digital songs in the United States.
  • Top Album Sales: a pure album sales chart.
  • Korea K-pop Hot 100: a music singles chart in South Korea. It was launched in conjunction with Billboard and Billboard Korea, and is based on digital sales via leading websites as well as downloads from mobile service sites using an industry-standard formula and the most credible music data sources within South Korea.

ALBUM STREAM

You can buy and stream the digital album/songs - all streaming activity benefits the artist and reflects directly on music show scores, although in different ways.

Streaming platforms that reflect on Korean music show charts: MelOn, Genie, Bugs, Soribada and FLO. MelOn usually weighs the most in Korean music shows scores, as it’s the biggest digital music store in Korea.

Streaming platforms that reflect on Billboard charts: Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Google Play Music, Amazon Music and others. Paid subscriptions are given more weight in chart calculations than plays on ad-supported services.

While it's really easy for international fans to use streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, it can be quite difficult to stream on Korean platforms if you're not from around there. Still, you can use the following tutorials:

PHYSICAL ALBUM

Purchasing the physical album benefits the artist by reflecting directly on Korean music show scores and Billboard charts. Most Korean music shows sales numbers refer to the Hanteo and Gaon charts.

  • Hanteo is a real-time chart whose numbers come from a selection of certified stores that report their sales for each artist every day - which means it only counts the sales from their stores list.
  • The Gaon chart counts all album shipments (how many stores stocked their shelves with that album, if the store placed re-orders, individual sales from websites, etc.), both to Korean stores or some international ones. These numbers usually factor for year-end music award shows.

YOUTUBE STREAM

Youtube's algorithm has always been unknown and everchanging:

"During the first couple of hours after a video has been published, we'll only show views that our systems believe to be valid. This might not yet show all legitimate views at that time".

Try to stream the video in the cleanest way possible. Here are some guidelines to help you stream the music videos on YouTube:

  • Open the videos on YouTube using a regular window;
  • Watch the whole clip - you need to watch the entire video for your view not to be considered a clickbait view!
  • Once you’ve finished watching the music video once, we suggest watching a few other videos for a while (5-10 minutes) before manually searching for the music video again and rewatching it. You should also use other devices to stream the music video so you can get views from numerous IP addresses.
  • You must watch the music video from Wonho or 1theK’s official YouTube accounts;
  • Share the music video link to your social media accounts, such as Facebook or Twitter. Do not post small clips from the M/V, as those views will not be counted.
SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media support reflects mostly on Billboard charts, and pontually on some Korean music show charts. Here's what you can do:

  • Follow Wonho on his official SNS accounts: Twitter and Instagram;
  • Subscribe to Highline Entertainment's official Youtube channel;
  • Mention Wonho and retweet content from his official Twitter account (@official__wonho);
  • For the previous point, organised Twitter hashtag events often take place — including his official account in your tweets makes it count towards the charts;
  • Search for Wonho on Google and visit his Wikipedia page, staying there for a few minutes.
VOTING

You can vote for Wonho to win on music shows by using each show's respective apps:

  • SBS MTV The Show has Starpass (5% pre-voting, 10% live voting);
  • MBC Show Champion has Idol Champ (20% pre-voting);
