Hunger’s Bite is out!

A specter is haunting the Atlantic!

After growing up together on the luxurious SS Lark, Neeta Pandey and Emery Botwright are ready to start their lives. Emery wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and sail the Lark forever, while Neeta yearns to travel the world. But neither will have any future at all if the Lark’s new owner, Mr. Honeycutt, has his way.

Mr. Honeycutt… The first-class passengers adore him, while he makes the ship a nightmare for the crew. Twisted by unnatural appetites, the rich are actually transforming into something less than human, and their insatiable demands soon push the staff toward a—quite literal— burnout.

Something otherworldly is undeniably aboard the SS Lark, something horribly hungry. But it’s not Wick Farley: vampire, secret agent, and paranormal investigator. Alone and at sea, with only Neeta and Emery to help him, he must uncover the truth about Mr. Honeycutt. And fast—before a ravenous craving for power consumes them all.

how was your experience with a traditional publisher?

Anonymous

mmmm probably better than what i’ve heard from some other people? i got a Really good deal compared to what i’ve heard, and the editorial process–while often frustrating–still resulted in me getting what i wanted more often than not. like i didn’t have to cut or get rid of anything. and my deadlines weren’t horrible, but that is probably more because i am significantly faster than the average comic artist. really the worst part is the waiting for feedback, but even then i got off easy compared to others.

that said this is the sort of thing that will vary from publisher to publisher, and even from editor to editor, and genre to genre. my impression is that MG is a lot more stifling than YA. you would not believe some of the things i’ve heard my friends had to change/cut for MG.

snailsthoughts:

Idk where that post is that said “anybody who tells you other trans people are the enemy is a Fed” but yeah, can we bring back that energy please?

Trans woman are not trans men’s oppressors, trans men are not trans women’s oppressors, nonbinary people are not responsible for transphobes not taking trans people seriously.

Talking about transmysogyny is not oppressive to trans men. Using the word transandrophobia is not inherently transmysogynistic. Talking about exorsexism is not erasing binary trans peoples struggles.

Like comon guys this is really basic stuff can we all agree on these things before moving on?

closet-keys:

men lose their masculinity (the social reward for correctly performed manhood) through advocating for, sympathizing with, or doing labor that is allocated to women.

(and I’m not talking about some innate, spiritual, or psychological masculinity. I mean social masculinity–being regarded by higher ranking men as masculine.)

you genuinely do lose your current standing if you meaningfully and consistently object to the economic, legal, and interpersonal status of women, especially in ways that implicate men around you.

many men believe that if they are willing to do this, occasionally, then they are owed a recuperation of their masculinity through some other means.

if they are sacrificing masculinity through advocating for women politically, then they expect to bolster their masculinity through receiving expressions of gratitude and adoration by women (“feminist men are so hot” “consent is sexy” “pro-choice men get laid more” etc.) or they expect to bolster their masculinity through emasculating other men by asserting the standards of masculinity they adhere to are the “real” masculinity (“real men support women” “sexists are immature boys, I’m a man” “I’m secure in my masculinity and they’re insecure” etc.)

to dismantle patriarchy, you need to be able to advocate for women even when it means losing gendered status. other men mostly will not respect you, and many misogynist women will not respect you either. it might not get you laid or praised or validated. in fact, it will probably subject you to increased scrutiny and criticism (because feminized subjects are always subject to such, and if you lose social masculinity, you too will experience this to some degree).

will you still advocate for women even if there is no social benefit and only social cost? do you have principles, or do you just want the fantasy of being a benevolent ruler?

Didn't have internet, so wishing a belated happy anniversary to Never Satisfied! I remember picking it up when the start of chapter 3 had just been posted! While it holds a special place in my heart, I am glad that you're doing what's best for you. And to be honest, I think it's been a good example (to me, at least) that impermanence doesn't mean lack of importance, and that it's okay not to finish things.

I loved Hunger's Bite and am hoping you're able to secure the third book!

strangestcase:

I think people would armchair diagnose bad people with cluster B disorders much less if psychiatric disorders hadn’t all been given names by ableists who of course picked the traits most unberarable to “sane” people to name them rather than, you know, the ways it affects the people that have them. It’s like, when doctors are all “this disorder gives you extremely low self esteem. and it’s called the Selfish Fucking Asshole Disorder” or “this disorder makes you want to die so bad. and it’s called the Hysteric Bitch Disorder” or “this disorder disconnects you from your peers. and it’s called the Insane Evil Cunt Disorder” and so on and so forth, so of course you have people going “oh, this person is a selfish fucking asshole, they MUST have Selfish Fucking Asshole Disorder! this further proves that all people with this disorder are like that in the first place!” Do You See It
