There is a short video here. Do listen to it.
Yesterday 28th April 2025, I was invited by His Excellency Dato Dennis Ignatius to record a podcast. Along with Dr Kua Kia Soong and Professor Syarifah Munirah Alatas. The podcast will go on the air exactly 14 days from today. If you can figure out the date of the broadcast you can figure out the topic of our discussion. Here is a picture, Dato Dennis Ignatius is on my right.
This was the first time that I met Dr Kua Kia Soong. I first read his book in 1995. Someone said that I have become a 'loner'. I rarely attend meetings and gatherings anymore. Since 2018.
But I am quite busy. Old hobbies have become obsessions. Often there are not enough hours in a day to accomplish everything. And you meet new friends and embark on new ventures.
Do watch the podcast.
The Air Kuning By Election has proven once again that Pas is not the right partner for parti Bersatu as well as the Perikatan Nasional. The Pas candidate lost and the Umno candidate who won increased the winning majority by a wider margin. The UMNO fellow got over 11,000 votes whereas the Pas candidate secured just over 6,000 votes - a thumping majority of over 5,000 votes, twice the majority from the previous elections.
To say that Umno is a strong party would be incorrect. The people are fed up with Pas, especially in a mixed constituency. Again Pas played up the race card to exploit 'non-issues' like pig farms.
The campaign rhetoric was straight 1950s or 1960s rural style nitpicking. Although I am no fan of the other side I must say that the lesser of two evils carried the day in Air Kuning. I am glad the Pas lost.
Bersatu should really rethink its association with Pas. Pas is going to be a burden that will pull down Bersatu. Did you know that in 1969 the Pas (or Pan Malaysian Islamic Party PMIP) and the DAP had electoral pacts? Pas fielded Malay candidates to split the Malay vote while the DAP fielded a Chinese candidate against the MCA candidate in that constituency. And the DAP would field a Chinese candidate to split the Chinese vote while the Pas would field a Malay candidate against the UMNO candidate in that constituency. Their common enemy at that time was UMNO and the BN (Alliance).
Perhaps Bersatu should consider an electoral pact with Pas instead of a full blown alliance. Going at this pace it looks like Bersatu and the PN are going to be history.
Bersatu really needs to buck up and become more relevant in their politics. Instead of trying to be an Umno 2.0 and regurgitate all the failed 'ketuanan' policies which not only do not work but which got Umno knocked down in 2008, 2013 and got them kicked out in 2018 and 2022 the Bersatu folks really have to sit down and present a truly Malaysian policy that favours all Malaysians - regardless of race.
I was disappointed that Bersatu did not speak up over that recent Indian temple issue. There is something called fairness and justice which resonates with all decent human beings. Or it always resonates with that decent part of a human being - even those humans who may not be as decent. There is always some hati perut and belas kasihan in all humans. You have to reach out into that decency. Then you may bring out the best in people. Always try to bring out the best in the people.
We need brave thinking to improve the economic future of the country - which is not headed in the right direction at all. The future looks alright for substantial numbers of people and at the same time the future looks disastrous for large numbers of other people. And this is the result of 55 years of disastrous economic policy making.
So it is actually a great time to be a political party because when the system is so screwed up, all you need is some duct tape (plaster), hammer and nails and you can do a wonderful repair job of the country. But if you can only think like a tikus then you are going to make the labu even worse. Tikus perosak labu.
This is where I see the Bersatu boys missing the point completely. They like the labu but they also want to continue the tikus policies. It wont work brader.
A few days back I heard a teacher say that in her school in KL, about 30% of the Form 1 students effectively cannot read and write - in Malay or English. Cannot spell, cannot string sentences together, cannot read at normal speeds. What about the remaining 70%? Have you seen those vulgar commercials that pop up on YouTube? Sekali sapu akan terpacakkk. Or 'saya letih sebab suami saya'. I dont think they are in the 30% category.
There are really more serious issues at stake than pig farms at Air Kuning.
This is yesterday's Dow Jones. It is climbing back up.
Talk is the Chinese and the Americans will compromise on the tariffs issue. They have to. Once the gajah-gajah besar can sort things out among themselves do you think they are going to call Indonesia and Vietnam back for 'negotiations'? Think again. Do you think they will call Malaysia ? Jangan bergurau tau.
There are much larger issues at stake. Our future is at stake. Bersatu better buck up. The people are waiting for real change. The voters will appreciate real change.
Non-Muslims can skip this. But it is really very brief. Two minutes reading max.
Today I tried something new. I have begun using Chat GPT for some of my research and writing. Chat GPT is the AI Search engine. But you have to double check it very carefully.
Today for this Friday column I typed in "Sunnatullah verses in the Quran" and within seconds the following popped up.
I had to do plenty editing because Chat GPT threw up verses which did not mention the word Sunnatullah. And then Chat GPT tried to explain that those verses were also part of the concept of Sunnatullah.
To me that is stretching things too far. If the word that I am searching for (eg sunnatullah) is NOT found in that verse then dont say it is. It will only lead to unnecessary argument.
The Chat GPT AI is just a Search tool. It does not think for itself. It merely sources what others have said about a topic and strings it together. It is not free of 'garbage in and garbage out'. Especially about religious topics. So I have to read and edit the material.
In the Quran, the term "Sunnatullah" (سنة الله) or 'sunnah of Allah' often implies the natural laws that govern the universe. The "Sunnah of Allah" refers to the principles by which Allah manages His creation.
Here are two verses in the Quran where the concept of 'Sunnatullah' (the way or law of Allah) is mentioned:
1. Surah Al-Ahzab (33:62) - "This is the way of Allah (سنة الله), which has occurred in the past. And you will never find in the way of Allah (سنة الله) any change." - Translation (Sahih International).
This verse speaks of the unchanging nature of the principles that govern the world which remain constant. It cannot change.
2. Surah Al-Fath (48:23) - "Such has been the practice of Allah already with those who have passed away. And you will never find in the practice of Allah any change" - Translation (Sahih International).
This verse reinforces the idea that Allah’s methods or laws are consistent across time and cannot be changed. After the sun sets, we go to sleep at night with great confidence that the sun will rise again tomorrow morning.
What all this means is that after coming into being and everything in the universe has been set in order, the Creation cannot change haphazardly. If there is change, and most certainly there is change (like the seasons change from spring, summer, fall and winter) it will happen according to the Laws of the Universe.
But things like these cannot happen :
Elephants walk on the ground and there is no Superman. Flying elephants and Superman are domains of the imagination.
China has done it again. Now China introduces some new science, some new technology and its manifestation - some new industrial product almost every other week. Otherwise known as Made in China. This week the aviation industry is buzzing with China's 'introduction' of a really unimaginable 6th generation fighter-bomber aircraft. The plane flew in the open and someone captured it on video. The aviation geeks are going wild.
The plane is huge. It has no name yet. It is about 60 feet wide. That is three terrace houses wide. The length is slightly over 60 feet as well. And the plane has THREE engines in a row - unheard of before. And listen to this - there are TWO air intakes on the sides and a THIRD air intake on top of the plane.
Here is a quickie on what is a 6th generation fighter jet, and then a short video that shows the actual plane flying in the air.
Key components of 6th generation technology are:
Here is a short video.
Conclusion : No other country in the world can even come close to what the Chinese have flown in the sky. The plane is already flying and has been captured on video. They will fine tune the hardware and the manufacturing processes. They will also load up the electronics arrays, the weapons systems, the AI etc.
Here is my prediction - in say five years this plane will become outdated. The Chinese follow this philosophy - the latest model in operation now, the next upgrade already at advanced design or prototype stage and the third generation on the drawing boards. The Chinese philosophy is to continuously improve.
Recall what I posted earlier about Chinese EVs taking over the world automotive market. Since my post Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi have announced that they are merging. Mitsondasan? Honisubishi?
Its too late.
