Flac files of wavs.  300 dpi scan of the cue sheet. Low resolution scans of the disc labels taken from Discogs.  A print ad confirming the date of the original show, and print ads about the syndicated broadcast.

Discogs says:

Matrix / Runout (Side B, etched): A Ch CMV 47784-2 03181

Includes the discovery of print ad placed in the San Bernadino County Sun by KCAL-FM 96.7 "The Rock Spectrum."  This is a rare find.  The print ads I've been including come from music magazines, such as Billboard, Cashbox, and Radio and Records. These ads are aimed at industry professionals. This is an ad placed to reach the rock radio listeners through a local newspaper.

That's unusual. Radio stations often took advantage of the free listings in a radio column rounding up a day or a week of programming.  In general, they did not pay a newspaper to promote the shows unless there was some promotional tie-in (album giveaways, the band signing albums at a record store).  And if they did that, it was an ad produced by the station, not an ad from the syndicated show like this one.

Radio stations and newspapers are competitors for the same local and national advertisers and usually didn't promote their products by paying a competitor to run a commercial.

There's also a snippy entertainment column mention in the Atlanta Journal dismissing the show as "Once hot Eddie Money is booked at the Agora Ballroom on Oct. 2," like Eddie was Friday's delicious pizza now sitting soggy on the kitchen counter the following Monday morning. Money's two singles in 1980 ("Let's Be Lovers Again" and "Running Back") scraped into the Billboard Hot 100 at 86 and 91, but with the advantage of my 20/20 hindsight, Money had a turnaround later in the decade with the #5 "Take Me Home Tonight."

I got your "once hot" right here, Atlanta Journal. The Source thought the show was good enough for a national syndication.

So... it's up to you, Our Beloved Voodoo Wagon audience...known across the Internet as one of the most perceptive and discerning audiences...to decide. Give it a spin and leave us a comment as to whether this stinks, or whether this rocks.

NBC The Source / Rossington Collins Band (Omni, Atlanta, GA Dec. 31, 1980)

Rossington Collins Band
NBC The Source 1981-03
Broadcast date: March 6-7-8, 1981

02 Rossington Collins Band - Prime Time
03 Rossington Collins Band - Opportunity
04 Rossington Collins Band - Misery Loves Company
05 Commercial - Honda

08 Rossington Collins Band - One Good Man
09 Rossington Collins Band - Winners and Losers
10 Rossington Collins Band - Getaway

15 Rossington Collins Band - Don't Misunderstand Me
16 Commercial - Honda
17 Rossington Collins Band - Sometimes You Can Put It Out
18 Commercial - Honda
19 Rossington Collins Band - New Year's Eve Countdown
20 Rossington Collins Band - Free Bird
21 John McGhan - NBC The Source 1981-03 Outro

Another from the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection.

No cue sheet, plus lousy low-resolution scans of the disc labels.

I've included an entertainment round-up from the Atlanta Constitution that mentions Rossington Collins was "co-headlining" with concert opener Mother's Finest, "but Rossington Collins will close the 8 p.m. show."

I'm not sure what "co-headlining" means when you're the opening act, and the print ads put you at the bottom of the page and not the top, but that's show biz, as they say.
It's a New Year's Eve show, and you can hear fireworks popping off here and there.  The set list is the band's entire first LP plus "Free Bird."

NBC The Source - Pat Travers Band - Warfield Theatre, May 25, 1980

Pat Travers Band
NBC The Source
for broadcast August 8-9-10, 1980

recorded at:
Warfield Theatre, San Francisco, CA
on May 25, 1980

01 Pat Travers Band - Rock n' Roll Susie
02 Pat Travers Band - Hooked On Music
03 Pat Travers Band - Gettin' Betta
04 Commercial - A&W Root Beer
05 Pat Travers Band - (Your Love) Can't Be Right

10 Pat Travers Band - Born Under A Bad Sign
11 Pat Travers Band - Boom Boom (Out Goes the Lights)
12 Pat Travers Band - Crash And Burn
13 Pat Travers Band - The Big Event
14 Commercial - A&W Root Beer
15 Pat Travers Band - Hammerhead
16 Pat Travers Band - Statesboro Blues
17 John McGhan - NBC The Source Outro

From the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection. Flac files of wavs.  We're missing good scans of the disc labels, but I've put some lousy low-rez junk I found out on the Internet in the Artwork file.  I've included all five print ads from the SF Chronicle/Examiner "pink section" (the Sunday entertainment tab section), plus a low-resolution of the trade ad.

Plus an exclusive interview with Pat Thrall, the second guitarist in the Pat Travers Band. Thrall was originally from Alameda in the East Bay, and had played previously with Automatic Man.

This show was added to the tour schedule a week prior to the concert.  The print ads from April 20 and May 4 have Travers at the Oakland Auditorium on May 24 and at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium on May 26, with no show at the Warfield.  The ad on May 18 adds the Warfield.

This is unusual.  Concerts were not booked in Oakland and San Francisco on the same tour. It's ten miles from the Warfield Theatre to the Oakland Auditorium (now the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts). Yeah, you've got the traffic nightmare that is the Bay Bridge, but you can take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) from Lake Merritt Station in Oakland to Powell Station in San Francisco in 39 minutes (plus walking two blocks at each end).  In a lot of cities, ten miles between the two venues is in the same city.

Def Leppard was the opening act, and for the Oakland show they added a band named Russia.

The ad on the May 25th mentions San Francisco's KSAN-FM as sponsor. KSAN did frequent live broadcasts, but there is no radio listing in the newspapers that KSAN did a live broadcast of this show.

Robin Trower / NBC The Source 1980 (Kiel Opera House, St. Louis, MO, April 9, 1980)

Robin Trower
NBC The Source
Broadcast: May 23-24-25, 1980

Recorded at:
Kiel Opera House,
St. Louis, Missouri
April 9, 1980 (see below)

01 Robin Trower - Lady Love
02 Robin Trower - The Ring
03 Robin Trower - Day Of The Eagle
04 Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs
05 Robin Trower - Jack and Jill
06 Robin Trower - Too Rolling Stoned
07 Robin Trower - The Shout
08 Robin Trower - Daydream
09 Robin Trower - Victims of the Fury
10 Robin Trower - Mad House
11 Robin Trower - Little Bit of Sympathy
12 Robin Trower - Messin' The Blues
13 Robin Trower - Rock Me Baby
14 Announcer - NBC The Source Outro

Another recording from the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection, and another disputed recording date.

Discogs says, "Recorded Live at the Kiel Opera House, St. Louis, Missouri, March 26, 1980 - "Victims Of The Fury" Tour"

The "Shout In Madhouse" bootleg says March 26.

A Guitars 101 post says March 26.

Setlist.fm has March 26.

But Concert Archives has April 9.

Which is it?  Four sources say March 26, one says April 9.

So, I checked the St. Louis Post Dispatch and found six print ads for April 9 and 10.  It was originally advertised as just April 9. The March 16th ad says "NOW TWO NIGHTS."  There are no ads for March 26.

That's the first line of argument: there are ads confirming April 9, and no ads for March 26.

There's a second argument against March 26 based on the supposed tour itinerary.

Setlist.fm lists has the tour running:
March 22 New Orleans
March 23 Houston
March 26 St. Louis
March 27 Santa Monica

The run from New Orleans through St. Louis is plausible.  You can do those drives in a single day. So, yes, they could play Houston and drive 800 miles to St. Louis, bypassing Dallas, Memphis, Tulsa and other cities that you'd probably play first. I doubt that it happened, but it is physically possible to do it.
Thanks to Gman for
supplying this great ticket scan!

But the jump from St. Louis to California is impossible.  That's an 1,800 mile drive. At 60 miles per hour, that's 30 hours.  You can't break down the equipment, drive it to the Pacific coast, and set up the equipment in time. It can't be done.  Yes, maybe they packed everything on to an airplane in the morning and flew, but that's not how touring is usually handled.

I'm going with the April date.

I also included a trade ad for The Source from the month prior to this show that documents that in April 1980 there were "over 100 Source affiliates representing 70 markets."  That gives us an idea of how many of these shows were pressed.

Mountain's music, at its finest, is an organic and feral experience, they are one of many bands commonly credited with influencing the development of heavy metal music. This also circulates as occurring on February 23.  That's wrong.  I've included the original concert listings showing the February 16 date, and a concert review from the Monday February 18, 1980 edition of the Boston Globe.

A newspaper on February 18 would not be reviewing a concert that wouldn't happen until five days later unless they had a working time machine.  If you had a working time machine, what would you do with it?  Leave your answer in the comments below!

Some of the circulating editions identify the deejay as Carter Allen.  It's not, it's Oedipus.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to post several new NBC The Source shows, so keep your eyes on the Voodoo Wagon!

Dom Martin - Plays Rory Gallagher

When we started this blog years ago, one thing that brought us together was our love for Rory Gallagher. Well, while looking around the internets yesterday I came across this guy. I guess he's opening for Robin Trower on some dates in the U.K.on his (Trower's) current tour. Not a tribute band by any means. Besides I hate tribute bands. This video is posted on Youtube. I have broken it into individual tracks for you if you wanna burn this onto CD.

Tracks are

1.Intro

2.I Don't Know Where I'm Going

3.Out Of My Mind

4.I'm Not Awake Yet

5.Crest Of A Wave

6.In Your Town

7.Should've Learnt My Lesson

8.There's A Light

9.Used To Be

10.Messin' With The Kid

02 Marshall Crenshaw - Blues Is King
03 Marshall Crenshaw - Whenever You're On My Mind
04 Marshall Crenshaw - Shake Rattle and Roll
05 Marshall Crenshaw - Someday Someway
06 Marshall Crenshaw - Mary Ann
07 Marshall Crenshaw - Right Now
08 Marshall Crenshaw - The Distance Between
09 Marshall Crenshaw - Reet Petite
10 Marshall Crenshaw - Little Wild One (No. 5)
11 Marshall Crenshaw - Cynical Girl
12 Marshall Crenshaw - Soldier Of Love
13 Marshall Crenshaw - Encore Break
14 Marshall Crenshaw - I'm Sorry (And So Is Brenda Lee)
15 Marshall Crenshaw - There She Goes Again

There's a bit of intermittent radio static on Blues Is King.  Hey, that's the way radio was back then. It settles right down after that into a very clear broadcast.

We get several nice covers; Mr. C takes on Big Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll," Jackie Wilson's "Reet Petite" and the fabulous Arthur Alexander's "Soldier of Love."  I note that the Beatles used to do the Turner and Alexander songs, back when they were playing the Cavern.

Once again, thanks to the Sam Elliot's Mustache collection of vintage Philadelphia radio broadcasts.

Bad Company - Unplugged At The Hall Of Fame 1999

Stunning acoustic set from a re-formed Bad Company in 1999. Formed in London, in 1973 by Paul Rodgers and Mick Ralphs, Bad Company later added drummer Simon Kirke and bassist Boz Burrell. Peter Grant, manager of Led Zeppelin, also managed Bad Company until 1982. The band enjoyed great success throughout the 1970s, and their first three albums, Bad Company (1974), Straight Shooter (1975), and Run with the Pack (1976), reached the top five in the album charts of both the UK and the US. Many of their cuts, such as Bad Company, Can't Get Enough, Good Lovin' Gone Bad, Feel Like Makin' Love, Ready for Love, Shooting Star, and Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy, remain staples of classic rock radio. They have sold 15 million albums in the United States alone. Although Paul Rodgers left the band in the early 1980s, by 1998 he had re-joined and the original Bad Company went back out on tour for a 32-date US tour in 1999, which included a live acoustic set they performed at the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame on 21st July, despite the fact that the group have, criminally, still not been inducted into the academy. Bad Company put on a marvelous show however, performing eight of their classic numbers in an acoustic setting, which display just how strong and timeless Bad Company's music remains. This complete package has now made it onto CD for the first time, more than 20 years after the show was recorded for live broadcast.

Flac files of wavs, includes 300 dpi scans of the cue sheets and disc labels.  Includes press listing to prove the date of the show.

And yeah, they don't mention the date this show was recorded. Here at the Voodoo Wagon Secret Headquarters, we dispatched a team of special investigators to get to the bottom of this mystery.

The first release of this concert was on BBC Transcription Service BBC In Concert 291, which has two additional songs (President Gas, Sleep Comes Down).  The Discogs listing for that bit of rare vinyl gives the date as October 10, 1982. Sounds good, but you know that just reading something on the Internet doesn't make it true.

So, it was over to newpapers.com to find actual proof that confirms that date, and we found it in the Westminster and Pimlico News of October 1, 1982.

There's also a review of the concert. Critic Mary Harron did not enjoy the show.  The Internet tells me Ms. Harron dated Tony Blair and directed American Psycho.

On Track 06, the song is introduced as "Angels" and it's listed with that title on the cue sheet, but the lyrics match the song "Only You and I."  I'm no Psych-Furs expert, but if you've got a Ph.D in post-punk please drop a comment below.  What's the correct title?

And for no apparent reason, Joe Piscopo shows up to handle the introduction AND do his impersonation of Frank Sinatra.

Flac files of wavs, digitized March 2025, 300 dpi scans of two disc labels and cue sheets...plus...PRESS COVERAGE!

First of all, let's address a dating error for this recording that's out there on the Internet.
As is usually the case, the BBC Rock Hour version of the concert is sourced from a BBC release.  The Tubes In Concert 259 was issued by BBC Transcription Services on August 31, 1981 and has a longer version of the concert, with three additional songs (Think About Me, Mondo Bondage, Tubes World Tour)

The Discogs information says, "Recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK July 16, 1981
The recordings were first transmitted on BBC Radio 1, 1981-September-19"

This is contradicted by a comment left on the Discogs listing:

"WRONG !
The show was recorded at Hammersmith on Monday, June 22nd, 1981
FIRST transmitted on BBC Radio 1 on July 16th, 1981..
SECOND transmission on BBC Radio 1 on September 19th, 1981
How do I know ? I was one of the band's crew."

Yeah, that sounds definitive, but we go the EXTRA MILE here at the Voodoo Wagon, or at least the extra kilometer when we're writing about shows in England.  I went and found English newspaper coverage that proves the show was in June, not July, so the comment is thereby demonstrated as a true statement.  Q.E.D.

In looking at the press coverage, I found Tubes singer Fee Waybill arrested during a promotional stunt outside the Virgin Record Shop, and later convicted and fined £50.00 for having been "an arrogant nuisance."

There was an earlier BBC Rock Hour 235 that aired August 30, 1981 with an identical setlist, and that's probably the same show...but it's not confirmed.

Another from the Sam Eliot's Mustache Collection.

This is a companion piece to the recent digitizations done by JustDave from over at The New JDP.  A few weeks back, JustDave digitized Westwood One Superstar Concert 90-02 (syndicated broadcast date of Feb. 16-18, 1990).  Sam Eliot's Mustache had a copy of the In Concert 90-34 version. It's the same set of songs in the same order as the Superstars version... but Blood On Blood is a longer version than on the Superstars Concert.

You can visit the most excellent The New JDP herehttps://thenewjdp.blogspot.com/

JustDave also tells me that there are differences "Westwood One #90-34 actually edits around Ozzy's swearing differently than on my #90-02. On #90-34 they edit around the cuss words and use parts of the sentence."

You'd think that Westwood One would master and edit the shows just once, and swap in different announcers and commercials, but we keep finding examples where the source material is edited differently but with the same set list.

JustDave and Sam Eliot's Mustache both had copies of the original satellite broadcast, so JustDave tackled converting both copies.

The In Concert version has the Miller Genuine Draft commercials that featured bands doing their jingle.  Unlike the Budweiser ads, the bands get their name mentioned.  My take on this is the Miller bands tended to be less well known acts, whereas the Bud bands already had airplay, and you were expected to be reminded of a recent hit that you'd already heard and recognize them just from their sound.
Yes, you can own his
used clothing...

There are two here I've never heard of (The Joneses, Billy Hill), and two I have (Mason Ruffner, The Rave-Ups).  Hey, the Rave-Ups were Molly Ringwald's favorite band!
We're missing the cues and disc labels on this one, but I put a stack of newspaper articles about the Moscow Peace Concert into a folder for your reading pleasure.

From Wiki:
The Moscow Music Peace Festival was a rock concert that took place in the USSR on 12 and 13 August 1989 at Central Lenin Stadium (now called Luzhniki Stadium) in Moscow. Occurring during the glasnost era, it was one of first hard rock and heavy metal acts from abroad that were granted permission to perform in the capital city, (being the first the ten shows the British band Uriah Heep played from 7 to 16 December 1987 at the Olympic Stadium). Over 100,000 people attended and it was broadcast live to 59 nations including MTV in the United States. The event promoted understanding between the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War and also raised money to help those addicted to drugs and alcohol. The concert featured six bands from abroad and three Russian bands. The concert ended with the various band members participating in jam session. An album and documentary were released.

It inspired the 1990 song "Wind of Change" by Scorpions, one of the bands that performed at the concert. The song became one of the best selling singles of all time.

Modeled as a "Russian Woodstock" the concert was a joint production by Russian musician Stas Namin and American music manager Doc McGhee.
