Traces
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Kevin Smith's third feature was an attempt to undo his "sophomore slump," Mallrats. Chasing Amy is an unexpectedly mature love story between a comic book artist, Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck), who meets and falls in love with Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), who seems to prefer women. Holden pursues her, much to the chagrin of his partner and friend Banky Edwards (Jason Lee). Smith handles the story's complex emotions nicely, even allowing for moments of open-hearted awkwardness. Yet he still manages to get his own brand of lowbrow/fanboy humor in, with jokes about comic books ("you're just a tracer"), jokes about Star Wars, and lots of tasty foul-language driven dialogue and diatribes. Smith even seems more confident about where to place the camera this time. Once again, he plays "Silent Bob," but this time with his own monologue, about the "Amy" of the title. The Criterion Collection released it on DVD.
