I first came across The Boulevard Connection when I picked up their first EP “Sut Min Pik EP” in a record store, possibly in Fat Beats Amsterdam. Of course I had no idea who they were, but figured from the notes on the vinyl label that they were from the north of Europe and probably Danish. It was the beginning of the golden age of “the independents” and they put their name on the map with that one (especially the hazy Haagen-Daz track featuring The Artefacts).

It was therefore super exciting to see them follow that up with the first instalment of Copenhagen (Claimin’ Respect), a 12” release featuring a lovely track - produced by Context - and a blistering trio of three mic generals: Rakaa Iriscience, Maylay Sparks aka Rahsheed and The Last Emperor. That track blazed across Europe and any decent hip-hop DJ had it in their mix tapes. At that time I actually made my first trip to the Danish capital, to flog my 1999 Remix EP as well as the newly finished Chocolate Lover EP - both vinyl pressings (which will be posted here soon also). Walked around the city spontaneously, figured out where the vinyl spots were (not a small feat as there were no smart phones then) and despite being a total out-of-towner, I was met with warmth, respect and support! A strong bond with Copenhagen was sealed forever.

Thankfully, like a proper DJ crew that understand other DJs, the Boulevard Connection graced the 12” with an acapella version (albeit without DJ Babu’s elegant scratching). And so it is that this gift has been remixed aplenty, and my own remix has actually been in the works since 2007. Unfortunately, at the time, my music production set-up collapsed before I could finish it, and for various reasons I did not pick it up - until now.

So, with no further ados, and as part of my renaissance and commitment to generate new material, I hereby gift you this re-composed Fat Daddy version, which is built off a wonderfully melodic and pulsating track led by one of the best soul vocalists ever (write in if you can’t figure it out - I reckon it’s fairly obvious). Big up to my DJ buddy Huggy Bear for applying his active listening skills and providing some helpful advice.

And please note the cuts (scratches) are all performed by yours truly, since the acapella did not include them. Thankfully I could work out where all the vocal snippets came from so I did my best to track and emulate DJ Babu’s magic on the original (bar the ending).

This is for public use and not intended for any monetisation - it’s first & foremost a contribution to the culture.
