Search FishBase
LarvalBase is starting to be revived with this update, via a collaboration with the University of Montpellier, France. We are currently testing possible solutions, so it is a work in progress. Visit the page for more information.
For this update, FishBase reached the milestones of 36,000 valid species. Thanks to our taxonomic encoders who rushed to meet the goal. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes reached 37,000 in November 2024. Trying to catch over but see the explanations here.
On December 30th, 2024, William N. 'Bill' Eschmeyer passed away. He was the creator of the Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (ECoF) in the California Academy of Science in the mid-1980s, of which he was the principal editor until 2018. FishBase pays tribute to him, acknowledging that FishBase has been built much more easily thanks to ECoF.
FishBase does not provide sequence data directly. But we deep-linked various international databases in the Species summary pages, under the section Internet sources. Via a collaboration with the Michigan State University, we have gathered these links under a dedicated page to be developed further, see an example. Work in progress.
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION in a recently launched project to integrate the monumental Dean's Bibliography of Fishes into the references of FishBase. The references can be searched separately in the References search. Thanks to ECoF and BHL. Work in progress.
A new table on the relationship between the first maturity and the respiration in fishes has been created with almost 500 records. Learn more in the FishBase Book. Work in progress.
