Within this large expanse, three separate areas can be identified where grammaticalized evidentiality can be found in verb forms: the Baltic region (Estonian, Livonian), the Volga-Kama region (Komi, Udmurt, Mari), and northwestern Siberia (Northern Khanty and Mansi, Nenets, Enets, Selkup).
Although the grammatical marking of evidentiality can be found in the northern dialects of Khanty and Mansi, no such category appeared in the grammars written about these languages until the 1980s, nor was the phenomenon described by another name.
In a thorough discussion of the subject (Nikolaeva 1999a: 132), she proposed the following schema to illustrate Khanty verb conjugation:
Obdorsk Khanty requires use of the evidential if the main sentence contains a verbum dicendi:
Jerimey Ipin, a native Khanty and a regional head of Save Yugra, questions the wisdom of introducing tundra reindeer into a forest area.
Andrei Moldanov, a Khanty herder from Numto, told me that he still had five tundra reindeer that he received in 1998.
In "Old Man Moon" Aipin presents the Khanty legend explaining why the moon waxes and wanes in regular intervals.
Other stories in the volume are selections from chapters of Aipin's novel Khanty, or The Morning Star, first published in 1990 in Russian before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The abuse of power by a petty Soviet official is the subject of another chapter from Khanty, or The Morning Star.
Although Vaschenko asserts that Alpin does not "follow blindly traditional Russian literary forms in order to adapt his story for the general reader," most of the sections taken from Khanty, or The Morning Star can hardly be described as innovative, for their themes and forms have appeared for decades in the works of other non-Russian Soviet writers, likewise decrying the cultural assimilation or annihilation of their peoples.
