THOSE familiar seabirds the
gannets have started to re-appear off Cleveland coasts.
"Eventually when he gets it free I thought he was being chased by the police with the speed he ran away as the
gannet chased him along the park.
Thebirdlives on tiny Grassholm Island off the Pembrokeshire coast, home to the third largest
gannet colony in the UK.
Photographer Sam Hobson said the breeding site for 36,000 pairs, the third largest colony in the UK, "should be a paradise for
gannets, but in recent years it has become a living hell.
One example is the annual October trip to help
gannets on Grassholm island.
I've long forgotten why it was "
gannet" - perhaps they'd heard about the greedy seabirds in geography.
"We find that when there's high winds
gannet chicks can get caught up and dumped in the sea and that's when they get into trouble because they aren't able to fend for themselves.
"It was odd behaviour for a
gannet, but every group has their individuals."
Second and third places were awarded to Mike Belson for 'Northern
Gannet Embrace' and Kevin Blood for 'Ripples in the Sand' respectively.
Another
Gannet was out of place on Rhyl's Marine Lake, while the winds also brought Leach's Petrels to Flint's Oakenholt Marsh, Point Lynas and both of Llandudno's Orme headlands.
And three helicopters went on a historic final flight from their base, HMS
Gannet near Prestwick in Ayrshire.
The paper called for more research into
gannet flights and for raising the minimum permitted clearance height above sea level to 30 metres (98ft).
