When thumb cocking, odds are the pistol will fire if the thumb should slip with the hammer just short of the
half-cock notch (or if the notch fails to hold).
Unloading the Frank is accomplished by placing the hammer at
half-cock, opening the loading gate and pushing the ejector rod to the rear as each chamber is aligned with the gate to kick out empties or unfired rounds.
The hammer also features a
half-cock position for field safety.
After years of hunting with my original, I simply could not get used to not having a
half-cock notch on the hammer.
The gun is then placed on
half-cock, and the conversion ring is turned to the "eject" position.
The Flattop is one of those "old-timers" that utilized a
half-cock notch for loading and disassembly.
The hammer is now brought back to the
half-cock, and the cylinder is rotated as one listens to one, two, three and then four clicks.
Although in all fairness, most were "pre-transfer-bar" Single-Sixes and Blackhawks I could set at
half-cock, flip open the loading gate, spin the cylinder, treat 'em as "5-shooters" and still feel kinda like, well ...
The loading gate interlock allows you to load the gun with just the loading gate openwithout having to pull the hammer to the
half-cock position.
To load the tubular magazine, you first place the hammer in the
half-cock ("safe") position and then turn the knurled cap on the end of the magazine tube and pull the tube out until the loading port in the outer tube is open.
Like the originals, the hammer of the Uberti trapdoor has three cocks: safety, which raises the hammer slightly above the firing pin protrusion;
half-cock, which is used for loading and ejecting; and full cock, which enables the trigger to trip the hammer and fire the gun.
This should have placed the hammer in the
half-cock or loading position.
This was the formal game, but more often than not, it went off at
half-cock: there was no more than one team and the aim seemed to be to manoeuvre the biggest and fattest boys into the line of jumpers so that their descent was like a six-chamber game of Russian roulette when everybody got hurt.
In future I will consider all angles before making
half-cock comments (at least I hope so).
"The easy choice would have been to have gone down there
half-cock but, as we saw with New Zealand, anyone who is
half-cock against that opposition is in trouble."
