What would it be like to walk out in the whiteness, to sink through the drifts as the flakes hissed out of a pearl-gray sky, to look back at the buildings small and then smaller still, and to walk on till freezing fingers and legs seemed a dull flame and pure white covered everything?
In the midst of the hubbub, we receive reminders as if gifts: snow has begun falling; the great river, now pearl-gray, fades imperceptibly into the mountains guarding its western shore.
The sagebrush cavorts in the wind with the blue and yellow wildflowers; the jutting purple and gray mountains embrace the gentle grass-green valley below; horses whinny at the oncoming storm carried by the pearl-gray clouds; and a mother cow moans for her calf.
The place has undergone a face-lift, but it was like the old days when guests sat on gilt chairs and watched the models descend the striking spiral staircase into the pearl-gray, mirrored salon.
Played out on a simple set (designed by Alexander Orlov) of pearl-gray floorboards and walls pitched slightly forward, Stoukalov's treatment captures the stifling atmosphere engendered by desperate people gathered in one place for the sole purpose of escaping their desperation.
