Here Paul Spicer's elegant and efficient direction secured full expressive freedom for soloists and allowed more delicate textures to emerge (especially the chamber organ's sweet reediness), without once inhibiting the chorus - enough spirit in evidence there to fuel this august institution through many more significant anniversaries.
The slight edge and asperity this imparts to their phrasing and articulation is well integrated into the full vocal sonority with its highly characteristic tang and reediness, married to a very direct but rarely harsh attack.
This emphasized the relative thinness or reediness in their voices; thus Susan Larson, spritely and endlessly inventive as the page boy Cherubino, returns as a despairing Fiordiligi, whose anguish at self-discovery keeps dissolving into aimless hysteria.
