Following multiple mumps outbreaks, with high attack rates among young adults, Mohammed Ata Ur Rasheed, Ph.D., from the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, and colleagues assayed blood samples from 71 healthy 18- to 23-year-old college students living in a nonoutbreak area for antibodies and MBCs to mumps, measles, and
rubella. Almost all of the participants (69 of 71) had received two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine in childhood.
In India,
rubella is encountered as 94% IgG and 7% IgM,5 while in Bangladesh 68.87% is IgG.6 A study conducted in Pakistan showed that 34% were positive for IgG and 3% for IgM.7 Little data is available in Pakistan regarding
rubella in pregnant women therefore the present study was designed to assess the prevalent situation of
rubella among pregnant women of southern region of Pakistan.
Laboratory Surveillance for Measles and
Rubella Viruses
Bahrain maintained 95% immunization against measles,
rubella over two decades as well as highest monitoring and laboratory indices across the governorates thanks to the patronage of His Majesty the King, decision-makers, the Ministry of Health, Immunization Group, Public Health Laboratory & Verification Committee, in line with the Public Health law, the Child Protection Law and the vision of the Supreme Council for Health regarding the provision of comprehensive healthcare to achieve the sustainable development goals.
The RVC met in Amman, Jordan, on May 15 and 16 this year to review the reports submitted by Bahrain, Iran and Oman, and decide on the status of elimination of measles and
rubella in the three countries.
In coordination with other World Health Organization European Region countries, Romania has a goal of measles and
rubella elimination by 2020.
The declaration came at a meeting of the Regional Verification Commission for Measles and
Rubella Elimination which was held in Jordan earlier this month.
The
Rubella serum IgM test indicates an acute
Rubella infection and must be confirmed by at least one of these tests: Rubella-RNA polymerase chain reaction or
Rubella IgG-avidity or western-blot (2).
Measles was affecting the Kansai region of Japan including Osaka, while
rubella had been spreading around Tokyo and Fukuoka, the Central News Agency reported.
Youssef al-Hadhri, director general of the national center for education and health information and population, made it clear that 7,287,099 children were vaccinated during the first three days of the vaccination campaign against measles and
rubella by the field teams and health centers of the ministry.
The continuing distrust in vaccines has resulted in a whopping 374-percent increase in the number of measles and
rubella cases in the country over the last 11 months.
Toxoplasma and leptospirosis tests were negative, while cytomegalovirus,
rubella, and herpes simplex virus IgG antibodies were positive.
