On the call of DG Khan's Anjuman-e-Tajran, traders are protesting over the accumulation of filthy
sewerage water in the said markets.
In a statement at the weekend, the group said the SC's August 2019 decision penalized Manila Water and
Sewerage System (MWSS) and its two concessionaires, Maynilad and Manila Water, almost P1 billion each for failing to finish their
sewerage projects by May 2009, as required by the Clean Water Act, which took effect in 2004.
Meanwhile, Tehsil Municipal Officer said, "A mega project for replacing the city's
sewerage system has been approved, which will be completed soon." He said that the PC-I for the project had been prepared and the
sewerage schemes had been divided into three phases.
While presiding over meeting regarding replacement of old
sewerage lines at WASA head office Shamasabad here on Wednesday, he directed the WASA officials and consultant NESPAK to personally visit the old
sewerage lines at each
sewerage division level.
An amount of Rs11.60bn would be spent on changing and rehabilitating the
sewerage and provision of potable water to the city.
Giving details in this regard, he said the previous governments did not pay attention to problems of the area, especially water supply and
sewerage lines were in a dilapidated condition for the last 10 years.
He said that all stormwater drains in Karachi were being used as
sewerage drains and have no capacity to drain the stormwater.
The
sewerage system in the city is criticized off and on by experts in media.
Talking to APP on Sunday, WASA spokesman said there were 90,000 manholes in Faisalabad city which were under the jurisdiction of WASA to provide
sewerage facility to the masses.
However, I strongly recommend that a masterplan, which should have been done long time ago, is needed right now to properly address the
sewerage and waste problems in Mega Manila,' said MWSS administrator Reynaldo Velasco.
(Maynilad) is still more than halfway through its target
sewerage coverage of 47 percent by 2021 after ending last year with only 20 percent
sewerage coverage.
