Benevolent sexist men hold women in high regard and are willing to sacrifice themselves to save and protect women, according to the study's co-author Jin Goh.
Men will be too afraid to hold open doors, or lend us their jackets because they will be seen as sexist ...
Because this benevolently sexist ideal relies on both female and male partners' endorsement of, and compliance with, traditional gender roles, women who endorse BS may be particularly likely to believe that a female partner who fails to uphold her traditional role risks provoking her male partner by "breaking the deal."
b) The study also manipulated the sexist ideology of the male partner: in one condition the male partner is presented as sexist, and in the other egalitarian.
c) Finally, the study examined gender ideology of participants, in order to examine the influence of sexist beliefs in perception of probability of a male partner feeling threatened and likelihood of an argument escalating into violence following their female partner's promotion.
The second hypothesis is that the sexist male partner will be perceived by female participants as being more likely to be threatened and also more likely to resort to violence than the male partner with egalitarian views.
Participants were randomly assigned to one of the conditions according to a 3 (consequences of female partner's promotion) x 2 (male partner's sexist ideology) design.
To check on the effectiveness of the male partner's ideology manipulation, participants also responded to a single item: To what extent do you think George is a sexist man?
The male partner's sexist ideology was manipulated by providing participants with one of the following sets of information: (a) Sexist: "George has traditional beliefs regarding the roles each member of the couple should play.
To check the effectiveness of the male partner's ideology manipulation, we computed a one-way ANOVA comparing the sexist and egalitarian conditions for the single item: To what extent do you think George is a sexist man?
