One of the most highly prized recruits in the country, Peterson was named the USA Today's Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2007 at Blanche Ely(Pompano Beach, FL) High School. Peterson also played in the All-American Bowl and was one of six finalists for the U.S. Army Player of the Year Award. Patrick totaled 21 tackles and five INTs as a senior, adding 733 yards rushing and 11 TDs on offense. As a junior, he earned All-Broward County first-team and 5A All-State second-team honors after totaling seven INTs and 37 tackles. His brother, Avery Johnson, is a WR at LSU. Patrick Peterson went by the name Patrick Johnson (his mother's maiden name) before formally changing his last name to Peterson in August 2008.
The Cardinals first-round selection (fifth overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft, Peterson has earned first-team All-Pro honors as both a corner back and kick returner. As a rookie in 2011, Peterson tied the NFL record and became just the fourth player in league history to return four punts for TDs in a single season. He joined Jack Christiansen (Detroit, 1951) as the only rookies in NFL history with four punt return TDs during their inaugural season. Peterson joins Hall of Famers Jim Brown, Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith as the only players in NFL history to be chosen to four Pro Bowls before their 25th birthday. Peterson also joins Hall of Famer Ollie Matson as the only players in team history to be selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first four NFL seasons.
Peterson has started all 64 regular season games and the team's '14 Wild Card matchup during his first four NFL seasons. Signed a five-year contract extension on 7/29/14 that will keep him with the Cardinals through the 2020 season.
