Maybe it's just because I'd already seen most of the big titles -- and because the local films, especially Smuggling Hendrix and Tonia Mishiali's Pause , slightly overshadowed the rest -- but
Dogman (from Italy) and Too Late to Die Young (Chile) were particularly fine.
Italian director Matteo Garrone is a master of using oft-depressing architectural milieux to symbolise the corrosive, destructive elements of Italian society: from the prison-like Scampia housing project in his portrait of mafia corruption, Gomorrah (2008), to the abandoned concrete condos of Castel Volturno he uses in both The Embalmer (2002) and
Dogman (2018).
Not only does the manifesto again show how Khavn situates himself and his work within contemporary cinematic practice, but it also shows him using impurity to resist the contemporary 'symbolic order' (here by becoming a '
dogman'--a chimerical human-animal filmmaker who functions somewhere other than dogme: see Baumgarter 2012: 119-122).
Marcello, the wiry and wide-eyed figure at the center of Matteo Garrone's "
Dogman," resembles such a character, though he's never made to spell out his views on the relative merits of human and non-human creatures.
