1. Either of two deciduous shrubs (Lycium barbarum or L. chinense) of the nightshade family, native to Eurasia and cultivated for their edible fruit.
2. The small, red, oblong fruit of these shrubs, eaten fresh or dried. In both senses also called wolfberry.
[Probably alteration of Mandarin gǒuqǐ : gǒu, the Asian tree Hovenia dulcis bearing edible raisinlike fruit (from Middle Chinese kəw´) + qǐ, willow, medlar (from Middle Chinese khi´).]
