The name Goshiki (meaning five colors) comes from the fact that the pebbles filling the beach shine in five different colors like gems when washed in water.
The conifer Thuja 'Forever Goldy' (top) has a golden glow that takes on an orange tint as the temperatures drop, setting the stage for the moonlight yellow tones on the speckled hollylike leaves of Osmanthus 'Goshiki' (bottom) to shine.
Among the varieties are Purpureus which has deep, glossy, dark purple leaves, almost black, when they are young, Variegatus, which is smaller growing and has creamy margins to the leaves and Goshiki, also known as Tricolour.
