Still another study suggests that, while all types of anti-hypertensive drugs are helpful in lowering AD risk, beta blockers--such as acebutolol (Sectral), bisoprolol (Zebeta), and propranolol (Inderal LA)--may be especially effective.
Some commonly prescribed drugs in this class include atenolol (Tenormin), betaxolol (Kerlone), bisoprolol (Zebeta), carteolol (Cartrol), acebutolol (Sectral), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL), nadolol (Corgard), propranolol (Inderal), sotolol (Betapace) and timolol (Blocadren).
The recommended medications are angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI), such as captopril (Capoten) or ramipril (Altace), or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), such as losartan (Cozaar) or valsartan (Diovan), beta-blockers, such as acebutolol (Sectral) and Bisoprolol (Zebeta), aldosterone antagonists, such as spironolactone (Aldactone), and hydralazine/isosorbate dinitrate (BiDil).
All patients were maintained on [beta]-blockers, either continuing their preexisting regimen or starting on bisoprolol (Zebeta).
A Cochrane review on the cardioselective beta-blockers atenolol (Tenormin), bisoprolol (Zebeta), and metoprolol (Lopressor) found that single-dose and multiple-treatment studies showed no decline in lung function among patients with mild to moderate reversible airway disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
In the United States, generic bisoprolol and its trade formulation (Zebeta) are approved only for treating hypertension.
