On this day
Today: In 1813 Napoleon was defeated by the coalition armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden (and an experimental unit, the British rocket brigade) at the Battle of Leipzig in Saxony; in 1901 the best known of Sir Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance Marches (Land of Hope and Glory) premiered in Liverpool. Two days later, at the promenade concerts in London, it received a double encore; in 1973 the Who released Quadrophenia, their second rock opera album; in 1989 the murder convictions of the Guildford Four, jailed since 1975 for IRA bomb attacks, were quashed.
Tomorrow: In 1714 the coronation of George I took place in Westminster Abbey. He had arrived in England from Germany the previous month, barely able to speak English; in 1960 the obscenity trial against Penguin Books, publishers of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, began in London with jurors being handed copies of the unexpurgated edition; in 1968 Jackie Kennedy, the former US first lady, married Aristotle Onassis, a Greek shipping tycoon, on the island of Skorpios, Greece.
Nature notes
Putting out the recycling can be a great opportunity to experience nature. Timing is important. Wheeling out your bin just after tea gives you a prime chance of viewing one of Britain’s most evocative mammals. Just after an October teatime is the blue hour, the period when the sun has sunk beneath the horizon and the last light turns the sky into a lapis lazuli dome. Look upwards during the blue hour, and you may see a pipistrelle bat whisking through the air. Drawn to the soffits and eaves of modern housing, they are commonly witnessed above gardens — and recycling bins! As a bonus, autumn’s blue hour is courtship time for pipistrelles, so the flying may well be particularly showy. Jonathan Tulloch
