Edgar Allan Poe was known in his time not only for his writing, but for the exotic animals he imported and bred. He developed several breeds including an all-black "Gothic" butterfly, the well known Poe Possum, and even new kinds of alligators, crocodiles and caimans.

Many of these animals got loose in Boston after his death, and while most like the birds or butterflies were left to fly away, others like the large reptiles were quite dangerous and none could be left unaccounted for lest they reproduce.

When it came to the Poe caiman, they had to catch them all.
