Want to know the best Goldie Hawn movies? How about the worst Goldie Hawn movies? Curious about Goldie Hawn box office grosses or which Goldie Hawn movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Goldie Hawn movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
When I was growing up Goldie Hawn (1945-) was one of the most popular actresses working. In 1972 and 1981 she made the list of Top Ten Box Office Stars. Hawn’s movies have grossed over $2 billion in adjusted domestic box office. I have very fond memories of seeing Foul Play (1978) in theaters. The theater was packed…the movie provided loud roars of laughter and had enough suspense to keep the audience on the edge of their sits. It was truly a great movie experience! We feel it was finally time to give her some Ultimate Movie Rankings love…..plus she was on our Request HotLine.
Her IMDb page shows 35 acting credits since 1967. This page will rank Goldie Hawn movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in North American theaters were not included in the rankings. To do well in our rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences and get some award recognition.

Hey Dan….theory of repetition….I just mentioned Laugh In on my last comment….and now Laugh In gets lots and lots of notice on your comment. That is awesome that you have all the episodes of Laugh In. Too bad all of their censorship problems ended that program after only 3 years…but then again…part of it’s greatness today is that they went out on top of their game. Good stats of Goldie Hawn. Thanks for sharing it.
Actually Laugh-In was on parts of 6 seasons from January 1968 to spring 1973. You might be thinking of the Smothers Brothers which was on parts of 3 seasons and made the top 30 all 3 seasons. They were always in trouble with the censors. If you watch Laugh-IN you can’t believe the stuff they get away with including numerous blackface skits and other ethnic humor. In the mid 70’s they tried to revive it as a summer replacement series but it only lasted 8 episodes. There was no Rowan and Martin on the revival and the regular all were nobodies that stayed that way except for one, Robin Williams.
Hey Dan….thanks for the clarification on the Laugh-In series. I guess in my mind, both shows are the same. I know Steve Martin’s first big break was writing on the The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. His first writing job was on The Summer Brothers Smothers Show. I have vague memories of the mid 1970s revival of Laugh-In. I did not realize that Robin Williams appeared on that show. Thanks for setting me straight…it is truly appreciated.
Over here when There’s a Girl in my Soup was released Goldie Hawn’s brand of humour seemed to appeal quite a bit to middle class executives whom I worked with in the Northern Ireland Civil Service but I never found her funny as a comedienne and probably the only film I ever liked her in was the “poor man’s” Hitchcockian-type thriller Deceived in 1991 which I am pleased to see you have given a reasonable 61% but the WH treats shabbily with just 54%
However her career itself does have an academic historical interest to me as a film buff and I therefore welcome your Hawn video. I see though that whilst she was clearly very popular at one time her last commercial hit was 22 years ago in the 1996 1st Wives Club. Still she’s now 72.
My lack of enthusiasm for Goldie as a performer does not of course preclude me from enjoying the POSTERS and here is my opinion of the best among a very fine selection overall worth 97% to me. Out of Towners, Duchess and Dirtwater Fox, a raunchy two for Girl in my Soup, Banger Sisters, Protocol, the 1st one for Wildcats, Shampoo, Everyone Says I love You, 2nd one for Overboard, Dollars, 1st one for Everyone Says I love You, both for Sugarland Express and the foreign language one for Cactus Flower.
You seem to have given us fewer foreign language ones recently according to my notes. I hope that that new kid on the block der Little Englander is not beginning to influence you!
Fine STILLS I feel are (1) opening one of Goldie with real life hubby (2) her as Burt Reynolds’ bedmate (3) with Mel Gibson before he went bananas (4) armed to the teeth and looking for all the world like someone whom the former President of the US National Rifle Association would be proud of in Private Benjamin (5) Gooldie with Meryl Streep (6)Miss Hawn in her underwear (6) with hubby Kurt again in Swing Shift and (7) and a lovely one of Goldie with the man who says he was startled when friend Tony Curtis, passing in the opposite direction on the other side of a crowded New York street, shouted across at him “Hey Walter I’ve just made love to Yvonne DeCarlo [or words to that effect]!”
You and Bruce are in reasonable agreement with 4 out of Goldie’s Top 6 best reviewed but whereas you rate Overboard highly as your No 3 he places it way down at 13th with just a 58% rating. Anyway good profiles overall from both of you.
Bob, thanks for the review, rating, info, trivia and comparison.
Glad you liked the posters and stills.
‘kooky’ Goldie Hawn was cute in the 1960s but she got a lot prettier when she got older, especially in the 80s and 90s.
In one of your paragraphs you mention Tony Curtis and Walter, which Walter is this? Matthau? Cactus Flower?
I’m surprised Bruce gave Overboard a low rating, I think it’s one of his favorites. It’s a Goldie fan favorite and was recently remade. The lowest score for that from my sources was 6.3.
The highest scoring Goldie film from my sources is The Sugarland Express which scored 9 out of 10. There are four scoring 8 out of 10 – Death Becomes Her, Overboard, The First Wives Club and Everyone Says I Love You.
Goldie on Peter Sellers – “Peter Sellers was great to work with. A lovely man. A little bit crazy in that he — you know, as I say, it was hard. It was sort of balancing a very delicate spirit on a needle. You know, because you never know where he was going. He was able to witness how funny he was, and yet not have any control over his inability to stop laughing at himself.”
Goldie on Kurt Russell – “We’ve both been married. I’ve been married twice, it didn’t work. He was married once, that didn’t work either. I like being independent. I like being his girlfriend. I like that notion. I think it’s sexy, and I do think that it’s a way of saying, ‘You know what, I don’t own you, and there’s no paper that says that. My union with you is in my heart and it’s in my promises’, you know, and that’s the best you can do.”
HI STEVE
Thanks for the feedback on my Goldie post and for the interesting quotes.
Yes the Walter I referred to was Matthau.
Goldie probably did peak in the 1990s which wasn’t bad as she had roughly a 30 year run as a top star.
Of the 7 films she made in the nineties 4 were solid hits and have an adjusted domestic total gross of around $645 million [average about$160 million] in Bruce’s chart above.
In the past 20 years she has made just 4 movies and they have a total adjusted domestic gross of a mere $154 million [average about $36 million]
HI BRUCE
1 I think I’ve mentioned before that I was never a particular fan of Goldie but she was an important star for a few decades so her career has interested me from a historical perspective and I’ve been keeping my eye on it even since it started to fade.
2 Your birthday update was worthwhile from my point of view as it let me see your take on Snatched. On a budget of $42 million it would need to gross $105 million worldwide to break even if Variety’s old rule of thumb that there is a requirement for two and a half times the production cost to avoid a loss still holds true
3 If your box office projection is anywhere near right Goldie will certainly not be seeing a return of the glory days of Private Benjamin though at her age that is no surprise but I see from your miniature poster above that in fact in Snatched she is billed 2nd to relative newcomer Amy Schumer who like Goldie would not be my cup of tea. Your critic/audience score of 57% is consistent with reports that I have read elsewhere of mixed reviews Anyway good “birthday edition”.
My comment on Steve’s You Tube video…which is now on this page. “Just re-watched her Death Becomes Her last night. I have seen 20 of her movies listed…and another 2 that are not listed. Favorites include #14 Swing Swift….fun seeing her and Kurt together. #9 Death Becomes Her…..fun silly movie….but good roles for the three leads #8 Foul Play…saw this one in theaters…loved it back then has not aged well. #7 Seems Like Old Times…this one ages better than Hawn/Chase’s bigger hit…Foul Play and #3 Overboard…fun movie with some fun scenes. Good video on one of the bigger actresses in my youth. Voted up and shared.”
As with the recent comments on Michelle Pfeiffer…..the conversation between Steve and Bob is both entertaining and educational.
As for Overboard’s love rating….well…some of it has to do with the fact…that our Rating % comes from about 7 years ago….just checked out IMDb’s rating…and it has risen nicely…..but it is till in the 6.8 range. MetaCritic does not like it, Rotten Tomatoes strongly dislikes it…….so it raised a little…..but it is still at a not so steller 65%. But I love that movie…recently saw the reboot…..and it was lousy….the original is still so much better.
Good stuff as always from you too….your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Bruce, 20 out of 25 is impressive, I’ve seen 7 and Flora 11. I was telling Bob yesterday that Overboard is highly rated by fans and a few critics too and I think I remember you saying it’s your favorite Goldie film or was it Swing Shift? Thanks as ever for the comment, vote and share, much appreciated.
