Scientists from different disciplines have studied the medieval settlements of Chios; however, very few have focused on the evolution of their urban landscape. This research is based on anthropogeographical and other urban-geographical characteristics of the settlement through the nineteenth and twentieth century, which are recorded with the use of computer-aided cartography (ArcGIS) and intends to (a) study the changes in the urban development of the settlement, (b) provide evidence to justify these changes, (c) study the current institutional framework on the protection and promotion of traditional settlements, (d) examine the initiative taken for the protection and promotion of this historical settlement and (e) introduce further suggestions for the protection, conservation and development of the settlement in modern reality.

Taking into account their contribution to the combined performance of education, the advanced research and the networking of knowledge, Universities are recognized as knowledge-intensive institutions and environments that foster human capital development, innovation and entrepreneurship. According to the current practice, Universities include in their mission not only a generalized transfer of know-how, but also the promotion of business thinking and entrepreneurial culture, the establishment of institutions, actions as well as the creation of venture capital, thus contributing further to the promotion of regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. By examining the entrepreneurship development in teaching and learning through the various actions of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Units of the Greek Universities between 2011 and 2015, the present article aims at assessing the contribution of the Greek Universities to the fostering of regional entrepreneurial ecosystems, making a comparative evaluation of them and strengthening the role of the Greek Universities in regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. Firstly, the theoretical approaches of regional entrepreneurial ecosystems as well as the role of Universities in Regional Development are examined and analyzed. Secondly, it is attempted to record the role of the Greek Universities through the collection and processing of innovation information and actions, utilizing, as a case study, the structures of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Units. Thirdly, taking into account the results of the research, proposals for the national and regional policy are made.

This article is based on qualitative research, as it studies documents found primarily in archival material, such as notarial acts, communal decisions, and correspondence between members of the ottoman administration and community representatives, as well as other historical, travel and geographical resources. * The present article is based on research conducted for my ph.d. thesis, Η συμβολή της τοπικής οργάνωσης των Μαστιχοχωρίων Χίου στη διαχείριση του χώρου κατά την περίοδο 1566-1866 της Οθωμανικής κυριαρχίας [The contribution of local organisation of the chios mastic villages in the management of space during the period 1566-1866 of ottoman sovereignty], department of geography, university of the aegean, mytilene 2007.

However, there are disappointing discoveries regarding the implementation and specialisation of the Greek national strategic priorities in entrepreneurship education, when examining at business level, the weight and importance attributed to the curriculum of the secondary education. The present paper sets out to investigate the necessity promoting entrepreneurship education in Greek schools of secondary education. Firstly, it presents the curriculum of the Greek lyceum related to the entrepreneurship education, including the very recent changes. Secondly, it examines, based on a field survey of 90 students that was conducted in spring 2014, the entrepreneurship educational needs of the Greek lyceum students. Finally, it proposes based on the survey results the design and implementation of a national strategy on entrepreneurship education.

Chios, one of the largest islands in the Eastern Mediterranean, became internationally known duri... more Chios, one of the largest islands in the Eastern Mediterranean, became internationally known during the 13 th century due to the production of the Chios mastic in twenty one villages on the south, the resin of the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus L. var. chia (Desf. ex Poiret) DC.), to which many beneficial properties and uses had already been attributed in the antiquity. The international demand for mastic led the various conquerors of Chios to prohibit free trade and lay down a system for monopoly distribution. After the island was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1566, following a period of almost two centuries of Genoan rule (1346 to 1566), the valuable product of Chios Mastic constitutes one of the monopolies of the Ottoman State. This article is based mainly on studying sources such as geographical and traveller's manuscripts dated back from the 17 th until the 19 th century, which are kept in the "Korais" Central Public Historical Library, as well as other historical sources examining the period in question.

In recent decades, many researchers have claimed that entrepreneurship is the most critical factor in sustaining regional economic growth. However, most entrepreneurship research is undertaken without considering the fundamental importance of the regional context. Other research has emphasized the role of social capital but there are substantial problems in empirically relating measures of social capital to regional economic development.

The aim of this article is, based on the results of a nationwide research addressed to farmers, instructors and head trainers, to explore and submit specific proposals for the reinforcement of entrepreneurship in the Greek countryside. More specifically, the aims sought through the results of this research, which was conducted among five hundred and ninety (590) trainee farmers, three hundred and twenty (320) instructors and fifty-eight (58) head trainers, are to bring forward the main attributes of farmers who wish to engage in entrepreneurial activities of the secondary and tertiary sector, to explore the aspects of the educational and administrative resources in the Greek countryside, to reveal their educational needs for successful business ventures and finally to put forward specific proposals both for promoting farmers' education and for the support of farmers who wish to enter the business field.

This paper assesses to what extent fisheries co-management schemes (e.g Fisheries LAGs, being regional/local governance instruments in fishing communities) are strengthening sustainability. The latter includes improving energy efficiency, promoting renewable energy sources (RES), coping with climate crisis, minimizing environmental impacts, and promoting sustainable blue economy. For detecting policy aspects of aligning climate neutrality and sustainable blue economy, the research lens focuses on the Greek Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) given that these are mostly located in coastal/marine and insular territories with significant blue growth potential. To map and assess their capacity and efficiency in pursuing Green Deal objectives, a co-development process with FLA...

In this paper, the potential of the soft MU involving small-scale fisheries (SSF), tourism, and nature conservation related to marine protected areas (MPAs), widely encountered in the Mediterranean Sea basin, is being assessed in Greece. Despite the fact that the MU concept is not yet included neither in maritime spatial planning (MSP) laws nor in strategic policy documents due mainly to the dominance of terrestrial spatial plans that favor exclusive rights of highly competitive and expansive maritime activities (e.g., aquaculture), the above MU is increasingly being practiced by local communities as a socio-economic instrument (fishing tourism), able to be also occasionally oriented to nature conservation. Following the Drivers, Added Values, Barriers and Negative Impacts (DABI) analysis, a spectrum of cha...

During the post-Byzantine period of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in certain areas of G... more During the post-Byzantine period of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in certain areas of Greece, back then, under Ottoman occupation, a particular form of cooperative organization was developed. Rural regions—networks of adjacent communities—having secured a special privileged status of community administration—were organised as a local production system designed to produce specific agricultural or craft products which were then destined for international markets. The present paper aims, first, to bring to light the Greek guild, its internal organization and its geographical impacts; and, second, to investigate the phenomenon of the cooperative community networks. In particular, it presents successful historical examples of cooperative organization, their deeper values and operational rules developed in Eastern Mediterranean during the post-Byzantine period. At the same time, it aims at the study and prominence of the deeper values and motives and main operational rules, firstly on regional micro-level of professional guilds and latterly on a peripheral macro-level of cooperative forms in between in the wider regions of Greek territory. Four historically successful cases of cooperative organization in the Greek territory thrived during the Ottoman occupation, aspects of which offer useful proposals for the founding and operation of today’s cooperative initiatives. The success of these cases is in line with the exploitation of specific political and socio-economic conditions; the parallel growth of an expansive, international commercial network; monopolies’ function; and the invention of innovative operation rules of cooperative organization.
