An investigation about these challenges has been carried out and a number of challenges have been identified. The most apparent challenges relate to different aesthetic preferences, lack of tools and methods, and difficulties in establishing form related requirements. The challenges are presented and design quality, as well as some solution strategies, is discussed.
An important competence for designers is the ability to communicate and present ideas and proposa... more An important competence for designers is the ability to communicate and present ideas and proposals for customers, partners, investors and colleagues. The Pecha Kucha principle, developed by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, has become a widely used and easy format for the presentation of new concepts and ideas in many areas and avoiding “Death by Powerpoint”. This paper discusses the need and tools for making short presentations and describes the result from a business development project where engineering graduate students in architecture and design used the Pecha Kucha format to present their proposals at the final examination of their project work. The authors conclude that Pecha Kucha is suitable for this type of presentations, although the flow of such presentations should be considered if used in connection with formal examination.
This paper presents an experimental approach to teaching 3D modelling techniques in an Industrial... more This paper presents an experimental approach to teaching 3D modelling techniques in an Industrial Design programme. The approach includes the use of tangible free form models as tools for improving the overall learning. The paper is based on lecturer and student experiences obtained through facilitated discussions during the course as well as through a survey distributed to the participating students. The analysis of the experiences shows a mixed picture consisting of both benefits and limits to the experimental technique. A discussion about the applicability of the technique and about the needed adjustments concludes the paper.

This paper presents a case study of a three-day workshop that has the purpose of introducing PBL to design students. A theoretical background on PBL and problems in design is established and is backing up the case study. The study shows that design engineering and architectural students without experience in PBL in general finds the approach to be beneficial when working on a design challenge in a student team.
Agile Development techniques have become the industry standard in Software Development in the pur... more Agile Development techniques have become the industry standard in Software Development in the pursuit for better performance. The popularity of these techniques and methods has caused them to slowly spread to other domains. Thus, the aim of this paper is to identify how some of these Agile Development techniques influence the team organisation, when implemented in the development environments of traditional product development companies. A case study of seven companies has been carried out in order to identify and analyse the challenges of composing teams in development environments where the agile process framework called Scrum is implemented. The case study has resulted in the identification of five specific challenges in regard to team composition when implementing Scrum in integrated development environments. The challenges are analysed and discussed and the team organisation of the respective companies are furthermore presented.
